Oscar Wilde was one of the best-known writers of the 19th century, with works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray widely recognised as classics. This self-proclaimed “Professor of Aesthetics” became famous in fashionable London society thanks to his brilliant conversational skills and insightful opinions on art and literature, and found success across a range of genres, including literary criticism, plays and short stories. However, Victorian society was deeply conservative and intolerant in matters of sexuality, and Wilde was imprisoned in 1895 for his relationships with men. He died poor and forgotten three years after his release, but his image has since been restored and he is now celebrated as a key figure of modern literature. In this book, you will learn about: • Wilde’s most famous works, including The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest • The literary movements and earlier writers who influenced his work and ideas • His personal life, including his relationships with men, which led to him being cast out of fashionable society ABOUT 50MINUTES.COM | Art & Literature The Art & Literature series from the 50Minutes collection aims to introduce readers to the figures and movements that have shaped our culture over the centuries. The beautifully illustrated Spooky Classics for Children Companion Reader is an exact transcript and dramatized versions of Jim Weiss’s award-winning storytelling performance of three classic tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Rudyard Kipling, and Oscar Wilde, available on MP3 and audio CD from Well-Trained Mind Press. For decades, Jim Weiss has entertained his many listeners with gripping plots, vivid characters, and beautiful words. But his performances are much more than mere entertainment. Jim's stories build language skills by filling young minds with wonderful vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and rich images. Now, our Companion Readers bring these language-learning benefits to a new level. Language, both written and oral, is most easily and thoroughly learned when heard, read, and spoken. Listen to the Jim Weiss performance on CD or MP3. Read along with the performance. The first half of this book as word-for-word transcript of Jim Weiss's performance. Students can improve their reading fluency, vocabulary, and their understanding of punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar by following along as Jim performs these words. Even students who are not at the level represented in this book can be moved forward in reading competency by reading along as Jim speaks the words. Say the words. The final element in language learning is to speak great words and sentences out loud. Each one of these performances has been turned into a short, accessible dramatic version that can be performed by two or more actors. The plays can be memorized or read from the scripts; either way, students will begin to gain confidence in their own language use and in their ability to speak in front of others.

Download Free Bernard Herrmann's The Ghost and Mrs. Muir PDF by David Cooper Full Book and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005-08-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author David Cooper examines the career of Bernard Herrmann, as well as the specific elements that went into the creation of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir's score. Cooper traces the development of Herrmann's craft as a film composer, especially through his radio work, where he made contact with Orson Welles, which led to his first film score, Citizen Kane. In this guide, Cooper considers Herrmann's musical technique and offers a theorization of some of the ways in which music can be "meaningful" in film. A quantitative, evidence-based study of the score is provided, in which, the extent to which Herrmann adopted screenwriter Philip Dunne's suggestions for music in the screenplay are discussed. A rundown of all the cues found in Herrmann's manuscript is followed by an examination of the score as a musicological artifact, and in his evaluation of the overall approach to the soundtrack, the author considers the musical detail of the score's structure, its themes and their orchestration. He also explores non-musical contexts of the film, including the screenplay's relationship to the popular novel from which it was adapted, as well as the contribution of director Joseph L. Mankiewicz and the performances of Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Cooper's thoughtful assessment of Herrmann's score is a fine tribute to this major work by a great and influential composer.
