Book excerpt: A teenage arsonist threatens a partially submerged mid-22nd century San Francisco. As a Public Investigator "tryout" seeks evidence across the utopian city full of canals and veloways, the political and social conflicts of a society based on generalized abundance and commonly held wealth are explored. Here's a vision of post-economic life with the pleasures, pain and confusion characteristic of the human condition across historic periods set in a San Francisco strangely familiar and yet dreamily different. When there is no such thing as private property, what is crime, and how does a utopian society protect itself from bad behavior? Should scientists be as free as artists to create? What is a 'free market' for work without money and commodities? "Many tackle the apocalypse, but not since Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia has a writer envisioned its Left Coast utopian aftermath. In Carlsson's highly imaginative sci-fi thriller, an alienated teen and an arson investigator reveal the fissures in San Francisco's revolutionary new society. After The Deluge deserves a wide readershi for its vivid blueprint of a sustainable direct democracy set among the still-familiar human cultures and neighborhoods - enhanced by greenways and canals - of the City by the Bay." [Laura Lent, librarian, San Francisco Public Library]

Book excerpt: Working people are taking back their time and technological know-how from the deadening jobs in small, under-the-radar ways, making life better right now. They reclaim the streets at Critical Mass cycle rides; they reclaim the urban landscape with guerrilla gardening and make common cause in virtual worlds with networks, freeware and hacking. This is a discourse on work, on what we do to make it bearable and the creativity of all those people who subvert the normal order of things. The DIY future is now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the world states are seeking out new and secure supplies of energy but this search is manifesting itself most visibly in Asia where rapid industrialisation in states such as China and India is fomenting a frantic scramble for energy resources. Due to entrenched societal inequities and widespread authoritarian governance, however, the pursuit of national energy security through transnational energy projects has resulted in devastating impacts on the human and environmental security of local populations. These effects are particularly evident in both Thailand and Myanmar (Burma), which, located at the crossroads of Asia, are increasingly engaged in the cross-border energy trade. Based on extensive fieldwork and theoretical analysis this ground-breaking book proposes a new critical approach to energy and environmental security and explores the important role that both local and transnational environmental movements are playing, in the absence of effective and democratic governments, in providing ’activist environmental governance’ for energy projects throughout the region. By comparing the nature of this activism under two very different political regimes it delivers crucial theoretical insights with both academic and policy implications for the sustainable and equitable development of the South’s natural resources.

The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complexity, Security and Civil Society in East Asia offers the latest understanding of complex global problems in the region, including nuclear weapons, urban insecurity, energy, and climate change. Detailed case studies of China, North and South Korea, and Japan demonstrate the importance of civil society and ‘civic diplomacy’ in reaching shared solutions to these problems in East Asia and beyond. Each chapter describes regional civil society initiatives that tackle complex challenges to East Asia’s security. In doing so, the book identifies key pressure points at which civil society can push for constructive changes¯especially ones that reduce the North Korean threat to its neighbors. Unusually, this book is both theoretical and practical. Complexity, Security and Civil Society in East Asia presents strategies that can be led by civil society and negotiated by its diplomats to realize peace, security, and sustainability worldwide. It shows that networked civic diplomacy offers solutions to these urgent issues that official ‘complex diplomacy’ cannot. By providing a new theoretical framework based on empirical observation, this volume is a must read for diplomats, scholars, students, journalists, activists, and individual readers seeking insight into how to solve the crucial issues of our time.

Flürscheim demonstrates that he has gone too far, however, in making the monopolization of land solely responsible for the miscarriage of economic progress: He has left out of sight the important role performed by Money in the human tragedy, and he has not even dreamt of the possibility that this despised Money might, after all, play the part of the principal villain. Flürscheim includes the role money plays in the process of distribution and provides an alternative solution to the land question, namely land nationalization.

Book excerpt: Capitals of Punk tells the story of Franco-American circulation of punk music, politics, and culture, focusing on the legendary Washington, DC hardcore punk scene and its less-heralded counterpart in Paris. This book tells the story of how the underground music scenes of two major world cities have influenced one another over the past fifty years. This book compiles exclusive accounts across multiple eras from a long list of iconic punk musicians, promoters, writers, and fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Through understanding how and why punk culture circulated, it tells a greater story of (sub)urban blight, the nature of counterculture, and the street-level dynamics of that centuries-old relationship between France and the United States.

Book excerpt: First published in 1927, Deluge is one of the most famous of the English catastrophe novels. Beautifully written and action packed--RKO Radio Pictures even filmed this story--the novel depicts a flood so severe that it destroys modern civilization, leaving the few survivors to adapt to the rigors of the natural world. Like other English writers responding to the trauma of World War I, Sydney Fowler Wright expresses a loathing of the worst aspects of industrialization. The flood, in his view, becomes an opportunity for the remaking of society. The protagonists soon realize that civilization and technology have divorced them from the knowledge and skills necessary for survival. Released from their over-reliance on social regulation, they struggle to overcome their own brutality to develop a new sense of community. For over 75 years readers have praised this book for its style and wisdom, and debated the meaning of its controversial ending. This Wesleyan edition is graced with an excellent introduction and annotations by leading science fiction scholar Brian Stableford.

Book excerpt: 'Excellent . . . This is narrative history of the highest quality' Andrew Lycett, Sunday Telegraph 'Wonderfully engrossing and intelligent . . . clever and entertaining' Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times HEYDAY brings to life one of the most extraordinary periods in modern history. The 1850s was a decade of breathtaking transformation, with striking parallels for our own times. The world was reshaped by technology, trade, mass migration and war. The global economy expanded fivefold, millions of families emigrated to the ends of the earth to carve out new lives, technology revolutionised communications, while steamships and railways cut across vast continents and oceans, shrinking the world and creating the first global age. In a fast-paced, kaleidoscopic narrative, the acclaimed historian Ben Wilson recreates this time of explosive energy and dizzying change, a rollercoaster ride of booms and bust, focusing on the lives of the men and women reshaping its frontiers. At the centre stands Great Britain. The country was the peak of its power as it attempted to determine the destinies of hundreds of millions of people. A dazzling history of a tumultuous decade, HEYDAY reclaims an often overlooked period that was fundamental not only in in the making of Britain but of the modern world.
