Download Free Evaluating the Impact of Prevention and Early Intervention Activities on the Mental Health of California's Population PDF by Katherine E. Watkins Full Book and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, California voters passed the Mental Health Services Act, which was intended to transform California's community mental health system from a crisis-driven system to one that included a focus on prevention and wellness. The vision was that prevention and early intervention (PEI) services comprised the first step in a continuum of services designed to identify early symptoms and prevent mental illness from becoming severe and disabling. Twenty percent of the act's funding was dedicated to PEI services. The act identified seven negative outcomes that PEI programs were intended to reduce: suicide, mental health-related incarcerations, school failure, unemployment, prolonged suffering, homelessness, and removal of children from the home. The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC) coordinated with the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), an independent administrative and fiscal intergovernmental agency, to seek development of a statewide framework for evaluating and monitoring the short- and long-term impact of PEI funding on the population. CalMHSA selected the RAND Corporation to develop a framework for the statewide evaluation. This report describes the approach, the data sources, and the frameworks developed: an overall approach framework and outcome-specific frameworks.
Download Free Tying Isn’t Losing PDF by C. Roberts Full Book and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was not long ago when forty-something C. Roberts realized his career trajectory had just peaked at the cruising speed of a 1973 Pinto. Officially at the pinnacle of mediocrity, Roberts decided he wanted to make a real difference in his career—other than bringing donuts to share on his birthday. Tying Isn’t Losing details ways in which he eventually achieved his goal. In his compilation of humorous anecdotes, Roberts offers musings on a variety of subjects, including his life growing up in the Midwest and subsequent journey into manhood, during which he soon discovers that copping a marginal attitude does absolutely nothing to help move him from the slow lane into the fast track. As he details how he attended college on the “extended plan” and endured a series of mundane jobs that offered nothing but headaches and little mental stimulation, Roberts provides an eye-opening glimpse into how one man seeking his true destiny learns to look inward first in order to realize his dreams. Tying Isn’t Losing shares a compelling story that offers encouragement, empathy, and humor to anyone struggling with finding their way in life.

Download Free Does Money Matter? PDF by Gary Burtless Full Book and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that American education can only be improved with a sizable infusion of new resources into the nation's schools. Others find little evidence that large increases in spending lead to improvements in educational performance. Do additional school resources actually make any difference? The evidence on this question offers a striking paradox. Many analysts have found that extra school resources play a negligible role in improving student achievement while children are in school. Yet many economists have gathered data showing that students who attend well-endowed schools grow up to enjoy better job market success than children whose education takes place in schools where resources are limited. For example, children who attend schools with a lower pupil-teacher ratio and a better educated teaching staff appear to earn higher wages as adults than children who attend poorer schools. This book, which grew out of a Brookings conference, brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines to discuss the evidence on the link between school resources and educational and economic outcomes. In a lively exchange of views, they debate whether additional spending can improve the performance of the nation's schools. In addition to editor Gary Burtless, the contributors include Eric Hanushek, University of Rochester; James Heckman, University of Chicago; Julian Betts, University of California, San Diego; Richard Murnane, Harvard University; Larry Hedges, University of Chicago; and Christopher Jencks, Northwestern University.
