Its primary motivation is the 2019 European Strategy update, which aims to determine the future experimental and theoretical priorities for particle physics. A key question is to understand what the standard theory (Standard Model) of particle physics really is, which the author argues has been a foggy notion for several decades which he clarifies. It then is to decide what motivated beyond the Standard Model theories are to be targeted by experiment. This book brightly exposes these theories, and puts current particle physics research into its historical context and points the way toward future work.

This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a systematic and pedagogical exposition of recent developments in particle physics and cosmology. It starts with two introductory chapters on group theory and the Dirac theory. Then it proceeds with the formulation of the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics, particle content and symmetries, fully exploiting the material of the first two chapters. It discusses the concept of gauge symmetries and emphasizes their role in particle physics. It then analyses the Higgs mechanism and the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). It explains how the particles (gauge bosons and fermions) after the SSB acquire a mass and get admixed. The various forms of the charged currents are discussed in detail as well as how the parameters of the SM, which cannot be determined by the theory, are fixed by experiment, including the recent LHC data and the Higgs discovery. Quantum chromodynamics is discussed and various low energy approximations to it are presented. The Feynman diagrams are introduced and applied, at the level of first year graduate students. Examples are the evaluation of the decay widths of the gauge bosons and some cross sections for interesting processes such as Rutherford scattering, electron-proton scattering (elementary proton or described by a form factor, and inelastic scattering) and Compton scattering. After that the classic topics like the role of C, P, CP symmetries and the experimental methods needed to verify their conservation or violation are discussed in some detail. Topics beyond the standard model, like supersymmetry for pedestrians and grand unification, are discussed. To this end neutrino oscillations, dark matter and baryon asymmetry are also briefly discussed at the first year graduate level. Finally, the book contains an exhibition of recent developments in cosmology, especially from the elementary particle point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have seen particular excitement in particle physics, culminating in the experimental confirmation of the W and Z particles. Ian Kenyon, who was involved in the UA1 experiment at CERN that searched for the particles, provides an introduction to particle physics and takes a refreshingly non-historical approach. The aim of the book has been to concentrate on the 'standard model' and the gauge symmetries because these form the core of the subject. Leptons, quarks and forces are introduced at the beginning. After this introduction the gauge theories are dealt with in order of increasing complexity. Attention is then focussed on the hadrons - deep inelastic scattering of hadrons, then hadron spectroscopy and finally hadron interactions. Current developments beyond the standard model appear in the last chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a practical introduction to the principal ideas in gauge theory and their applications to elementary particle physics. It explains technique and methodology with simple exposition backed up by many illustrative examples. Derivations, some of well known results, are presented in sufficient detail to make the text accessible to readers entering the field for the first time. The book focuses on the strong interaction theory of quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak interaction theory of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, as well as the grand unification theory, exemplified by the simplest SU(5) model. Not intended as an exhaustive survey, the book nevertheless provides the general background necessary for a serious student who wishes to specialize in the field of elementary particle theory. Physicists with an interest in general aspects of gauge theory will also find the book highly useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Standard Model is the theory of elementary building blocks of matter and of their forces. It is the most comprehensive physical theory ever developed, and has been experimentally tested with high accuracy." "This textbook conveys the basic elements of the Standard Model using elementary concepts, without theoretical rigour. While most texts on this subject emphasise theoretical aspects, this textbook contains examples of basic experiments, before going into the theory. This allows readers to see howmeasurements and theory interplay in the development of physics. The author examines leptons, hadrons and quarks, before presenting the dynamics and the surprising properties of the charges of the different forces. The textbook concludes with a brief discussion on the recent discoveries of physics beyond the Standard Model, and its connections with cosmology." "Quantitative examples are given, and the reader is guided through the necessary calculations. Each chapter ends in the exercises, and solutions to some problems are included in the book. Complete solutions are available to instructors at www.cambridge.org/9780521880213. This textbook is suitable for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Landoldt-Börnstein Data Collection has become known as a compilation of numerical data and functional relations. However, already in the past some volumes have been published which went beyond that objective and provided a more comprehensive summary of a special field. In agreement with the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Werner Martienssen, Volume I/21 will be a further step in extending the purpose and in modernizing the Landoldt-Börnstein Series. This volume will provide in the style of an encyclopedia a summary of the results of particle physics and the methods and instruments to obtain this information. Subvolume I/21A reports on the present state of theoretical and experimental knowledge in particle physics. In Subvolume I/21B detectors and data handling will be covered and Subvolume I/21C will be devoted to the technology of accelerators and colliders. The time to give a summary of elementary particle physics seems to be appropriate. The results of the electron-positron collider LEP at CERN have been fully analyzed and also the data of the other facilities in operation (e.g. TEVATRON and "Beauty-factories") have achieved a certain maturity. It will take several years before new data from the LHC starting operation in 2008 will become available to indicate new ways beyond the well established "Standard Model of Particle Physics". Of course, results from n- accelerator physics continue to come in and the most recent results are reported. Since particle physics and cosmology become ever more intertwined one chapter is devoted to this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While theoretical particle physics is an extraordinarily fascinating field, the incredibly fast pace at which it moves along, combined with the huge amount of background information necessary to perform cutting edge research, poses a formidable challenge for graduate students. This book represents the first in a series designed to assist students in the process of transitioning from coursework to research in particle physics. Rather than reading literally dozens of physics and mathematics texts, trying to assimilate the countless ideas, translate notations and perspectives, and see how it all fits together to get a holistic understanding, this series provides a detailed overview of the major mathematical and physical ideas in theoretical particle physics. Ultimately the ideas will be presented in a unified, consistent, holistic picture, where each topic is built firmly on what has come before, and all topics are related in a clear and intuitive way. This introductory text on quantum field theory and particle physics provides both a self-contained and complete introduction to not only the necessary physical ideas, but also a complete introduction to the necessary mathematical tools. Assuming minimal knowledge of undergraduate physics and mathematics, this book lays both the mathematical and physical groundwork with clear, intuitive explanations and plenty of examples. The book then continues with an exposition of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, the theory that currently seems to explain the universe apart from gravity. Furthermore, this book was written as a primer for the more advanced mathematical and physical ideas to come later in this series.

Download Free Particles and Fundamental Interactions PDF by Sylvie Braibant Full Book and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides theoretical and phenomenological insights on the structure of matter, presenting concepts and features of elementary particle physics and fundamental aspects of nuclear physics. Starting with the basics (nomenclature, classification, acceleration techniques, detection of elementary particles), the properties of fundamental interactions (electromagnetic, weak and strong) are introduced with a mathematical formalism suited to undergraduate students. Some experimental results (the discovery of neutral currents and of the W± and Z0 bosons; the quark structure observed using deep inelastic scattering experiments) show the necessity of an evolution of the formalism. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book. For example, the CP violation currently measured does not explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the observable universe; the neutrino oscillations and the estimated amount of cosmological dark matter seem to require new physics beyond the Standard Model. A list of other introductory texts, work reviews and some specialized publications is reported in the bibliography.
