Download Free Geologic History of the Feather River Country, California PDF by Cordell Durrell Full Book and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1988-02-25 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Sierra Nevada and adjacent lands come to be the size and shape they are today? This book covers 400 million years of physical evolution in a language understandable to nonscientists, tracing the volcanic activity, the folding and building of mountains, the breaking of blocks along fault lines, and the work of erosion and glaciers that have created today's dramatic landscape. Cordell Durrell spent a lifetime reading this complex story of movement and change in the rocks of the Feather River country. He shares with readers the excitement of discovering by remote but careful inference what must have happened millions upon millions of years ago. The basic methods of geologic analysis that Durrell describes can be applied anywhere on the earth's surface, lending new fascination to our travels throughout the frozen arctic, dry deserts, tropical rainforests, low swamps, and high mountains like California's magnificent Sierra.

Download Free The Religion of the Indians of California PDF by A. L. Kroeber Full Book and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an account of the religion of the Indians of California. It describes the religion as very similar to that of savage and uncivilized races the world over. Like all such peoples, the California Indians were in an animistic state of mind, in which they attributed life, intelligence, and especially supernatural power, to virtually all living and lifeless things. They lacked no less the ideas and practices of shamanism, the universal accompaniment of animism: namely, the belief that certain men, through communication with the animate supernatural world, had the power to accomplish what was contrary to, or rather above, the events of daily ordinary experience, which latter in so far as they were distinguished from the happenings caused by supernatural agencies, were of natural, meaningless, and, as it were, accidental origin. As in most parts of the world, belief in shamanistic power was centered most strongly on disease and death, which among most tribes were not only believed to be dispellable but to be entirely caused by shamans. In common with the other American Indians, those of California made dancing, and with it always singing, a conspicuous part of nearly all their ceremonies that were of a public or tribal nature. They differed from almost all other tribes of North America by showing a much weaker development of ritualism, and symbolism shading into pictography, which constitute perhaps the most distinctive feature of the religion of the Americans as a whole.

This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California Dreaming is about my journey to America for higher studies in 1961 and my difficult first 2 years. On the way I had a wonderful shipboard romance with Kavita, a tall Indian woman. We parted in Italy and we were heartbroken. Before we could meet in America she had to rush back to India because Grandmother had a heart attack. Later she visited with her mother. The highlight was her trying on a bikini. What a beautiful sight--voluptuous breasts, curvy body, long legs! It was huge turn-on and later we enjoyed passionate lovemaking. Love of my life could not stay and had to return to India. I wondered if I would see her again. College in Indiana was great, but I could not handle snow and California was calling! Driving there in an old car was adventurous. Discrimination was high against a turbaned Sikh. No decent jobs were available to me. Finally I got a job at a packinghouse. It was hard keeping my head above water while studying at Fresno State. Where is Kavita? Are we destined to be together?
