Book excerpt: A number of cases of serious child abuse have resulted from beliefs that children may be possessed by evil spirits and may then be given the power to bewitch others. Misfortune, failure, illness and even death may be blamed on them. The 'cure', nowadays called deliverance rather than exorcism, is to expel the spirits, sometimes by violent means. This book draws together contributions on aspects of possession and witchcraft from leading academics and expert practitioners in the field. It has been put together following conferences held by Inform, a charity that provides accurate information on new religions as a public service. There is no comparable information publicly available; this book is the first of its kind. Eileen Barker, founder of Inform, introduces the subject and Inform's Deputy Director goes on to detail the requests the charity has answered in recent years on the subject of children, possession and witchcraft. This book offers an invaluable resource for readers, whether academic or practitioner - particularly those in the fields of the safeguarding of children, and their education, health and general welfare.

While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance. Such writers wrestle with the gods themselves." —Washington Post Look for Cormac McCarthy's new novel, The Passenger, coming October '22.

One who is full of exaggerations, quick to respond, careless with words, and acts without thinking. Do you have a child who gets out of his seat regularly while he's not suppose to, interrupts conversations, or jumps to the front of the line uninvited? Impulsiveness is the quick, natural response for these kids. They might do all these things and more (keep in mind, they generally do them rapidly). Nevertheless in the very same breathe, impulsive kids can be quick to defend, remorseful for poor decisions, and able to leap over obstacles in a single bound. There's a gift for us to discover in impulsiveness. The disciple, Peter, emulates both the strengths and weaknesses of impulsive behavior. Impulsiveness had Peter rushing into the water to meet Jesus, while also quickly cutting off a soldier's ear. He was quick to defend, responded without thinking, and passionate beyond words. His impulsiveness allowed him to experience the miracle of walking on water, while everyone else watched him from inside the boat. The beauty of Peter's impulsiveness is displayed within his life. Peter's impulsiveness allowed him to experience close encounters with God. He's authentic and real. He's growing and he's a challenge. But in the end, he's solid, and the guy others wanted to follow. Discovering the gift of impulsiveness begins in the life of Peter.

Download Free Conceptualizing Cruelty to Children in Nineteenth-Century England PDF by Monica Flegel Full Book and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving nimbly between literary and historical texts, Monica Flegel provides a much-needed interpretive framework for understanding the specific formulation of child cruelty popularized by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the late nineteenth century. Flegel considers a wide range of well-known and more obscure texts from the mid-eighteenth century to the early twentieth, including philosophical writings by Locke and Rousseau, poetry by Coleridge, Blake, and Caroline Norton, works by journalists and reformers like Henry Mayhew and Mary Carpenter, and novels by Frances Trollope, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, and Arthur Morrison. Taking up crucial topics such as the linking of children with animals, the figure of the child performer, the relationship between commerce and child endangerment, and the problem of juvenile delinquency, Flegel examines the emergence of child abuse as a subject of legal and social concern in England, and its connection to earlier, primarily literary representations of endangered children. With the emergence of the NSPCC and the new crime of cruelty to children, new professions and genres, such as child protection and social casework, supplanted literary works as the authoritative voices in the definition of social ills and their cure. Flegel argues that this development had material effects on the lives of children, as well as profound implications for the role of class in representations of suffering and abused children. Combining nuanced close readings of individual texts with persuasive interpretations of their influences and limitations, Flegel's book makes a significant contribution to the history of childhood, social welfare, the family, and Victorian philanthropy.
