Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How British Columbia became an international hotspot for submarines, submersibles, Newt Suits, underwater robotics and a host of other cutting-edge undersea technologies. In Deep, Dark and Dangerous, maritime historian Vickie Jensen explores the fascinating story of British Columbia’s rise to become a world leader in the underwater tech industry, tracing BC’s colourful history and bright future as a front runner in the world of subsea technology innovation. This little-known saga began with the remarkable story of Pisces I. In the early 1960s, two commercial hard-hat divers from the Vancouver area, Don Sorte and Al Trice, and engineer Mack Thompson realized that they needed a small manned submersible with robot arms for deep-sea work. They couldn’t find one to buy, so they decided to build their own. Experts told them such things could only be built in specialized facilities and it would be suicidal to try a home-made version. Just over two years and $100,000 later their Pisces I was successfully making two-thousand-foot dives. The three innovators formed a company called International Hydrodynamics (HYCO) as orders started to arrive from around the world. In the process of building some fourteen submersibles, HYCO would serve as an incubator for a generation of experts that would launch an entire industry of subsea companies in BC. Drawing on her background in documenting both history and industry, Vickie Jensen uncovers stories, both historical and current, detailing the submarines, submersibles, robots, torpedo recovery technology and inventions that are responsible for BC’s remarkable and continuing subsea reputation. Written with colour and flair, this is a fascinating and exciting story that anyone can enjoy.

Download Free The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria PDF by Greg King Full Book and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Erik Larson's Dead Wake comes The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria, about the sinking of the glamorous Italian ocean liner, including never-before-seen photos of the wreck today. In 1956, a stunned world watched as the famous Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria sank after being struck by a Swedish vessel off the coast of Nantucket. Unlike the tragedy of the Titanic, this sinking played out in real time across radios and televisions, the first disaster of the modern age. Audiences witnessed everything that ensued after the unthinkable collision of two modern vessels equipped with radar: perilous hours of uncertainty; the heroic rescue of passengers; and the final gasp as the pride of the Italian fleet slipped beneath the Atlantic, taking some fifty lives with her. Her loss signaled the end of the golden age of ocean liner travel. Now, Greg King and Penny Wilson offer a fresh look at this legendary liner and her tragic fate. Andrea Doria represented the romance of travel, the possibility of new lives in the new world, and the glamour of 1950s art, culture, and life. Set against a glorious backdrop of celebrity and La Dolce Vita, Andrea Doria's last voyage comes vividly to life in a narrative tightly focused on her passengers – Cary Grant's wife; Philadelphia's flamboyant mayor; the heiress to the Marshall Field fortune; and many brave Italian emigrants – who found themselves plunged into a desperate struggle to survive. The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria follows the effect this trauma had on their lives, and brings the story up-to-date with the latest expeditions to the wreck. Drawing on in-depth research, interviews with survivors, and never-before-seen photos of the wreck as it is today, The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria is a vibrant story of fatal errors, shattered lives, and the triumph of the human spirit.
Download Free Yijing Wondering and Wandering PDF by Jane Schorre Full Book and published by Arts of China Seminars. This book was released on 2004 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique contemplation of Yijing (I Ching). In the first part, Wondering, Jane Schorre ponders the meaning of the hexagrams, taking into consideration their arrangement, their relationships as thirty-two reflecting pairs, and their characters -- the Chinese names. Along her way, she retells selections from the classics of Laotse and Zhuangzi for illustration and clarification. In the second part, Wandering, Carrin Dunne carries the meditation further, wandering through the labyrinth of trigrams, nuclear trigrams, and line texts -- exploring psychological and spiritual meaning in the individual lines and their movements. Along her way, her discovery of the 'foursomes' leads to a kaleidoscopic view of Yijing as a whole and to a new approach ("a key, not the key") to meaning in Yijing.

In this book Manfred Kets de Vries, one of the world's leading authorities on the psychology of leadership, and a pioneering practitioner in the field of psychodynamic executive coaching, draws on the format of traditional fairy tales and tells us five stories that dramatize five key themes of dysfunctional leadership. The accompanying commentaries analyze each tale and examine the ways in which it applies to leadership behavior and organizational practices. This diagnostic element is supported by self-assessment tests that reinforce the main lessons of each tale and guide the reader's interpretation of the results.
