Download Free Harry B. Smith PDF by John Franceschina Full Book and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry B. Smith was the most prolific writer of librettos for the American musical theatre in history, with nearly half of his 300 works actually opening in New York City. In addition, Smith was instrumental in adapting and popularizing foreign musicals in America, significantly influencing writing and composing styles of American shows. He worked with every major composer in America between 1880 and 1920, and consequently this examination of his work and process is highly instructive of the history of the American musical.
Download Free Operetta PDF by Robert Ignatius Letellier Full Book and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operetta developed in the second half of the 19th century from the French opéra-comique and the more lighthearted German Singspiel. As the century progressed, the serious concerns of mainstream opera were sustained and intensified, leaving a gap between opéra-comique and vaudeville that necessitated a new type of stage work. Jacques Offenbach, son of a Cologne synagogue cantor, established himself in Paris with his series of opéras-bouffes. The popular success of this individual new form of entertainment light, humorous, satirical and also sentimental led to the emergence of operetta as a separate genre, an art form with its own special flavour and concerns, and no longer simply a "little opera". Attempts to emulate Offenbach's success in France and abroad generated other national schools of operetta and helped to establish the genre internationally, in Spain, in England, and especially in Austria Hungary. Here it inspired works by Franz von Suppé and Johann Strauss II (the Golden Age), and later Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán (the Silver Age). Viennese operetta flourished conterminously with the Habsburg Empire and the mystique of Vienna, but, after the First World War, an artistically vibrant Berlin assumed this leading position (with Paul Lincke, Leon Jessel and Edouard Künnecke). As popular musical tastes diverged more and more during the interwar years, with the advent of new influences—like those of cabaret, the revue, jazz, modern dance music and the cinema, as well as changing social mores—the operetta genre took on new guises. This was especially manifested in the musical comedy of London's West End and New York's Broadway, with their imitators generating a success that opened a new golden age for the reinvented genre, especially after the Second World War. This source book presents an overview of the operetta genre in all its forms. The second volume provides a survey of the national schools of Germany, Spain, England, America, the Slavonic countries (especially Russia), Hungary, Italy and Greece. The principal composers are considered in chronological sequence, with biographical material and a list of stage works, selected synopses and some commentary. This volume also contains a discography and an index covering both volumes (general entries, singers and theatres).

This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One autumn night in the eighties a young Irishman of twenty-seven, who had passed most of his life in Germany, took his place in the orchestra pit of the Metropolitan Opera House to play the cello. His name was Victor Herbert. He had just arrived in New York, and from his obscure seat he looked around curiously at the mass of faces glowing weirdly in the vast, dim auditorium. He felt a symbolic force in the crowding immensity of the place, in the numerous dazzling points of light that leaped back from the precious stones on the hands and breasts of the women who sat in the two great curving tiers of boxes. What future was he to have in this land? The conductor emerged from the depths beneath the stage to his eminence on the podium. Applause rolled over the heads of the musicians below him. He raised his baton and the opera began. Twenty-five years later, the same immigrant heard from the stage of the same theatre the performance of an opera he himself had written. Similar rolls of applause came from the audience, but this time not to pass over his head in the pit. The acclaim was for him, a tribute to his artistry. Thus, in the romantic fashion, may be outlined the beginning and the climax of the career of the most popular composer of light opera to be developed in the American theatre. And of one of the most beloved figures who ever made the rounds of Broadway.

Download Free Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1786 to 1923 PDF by John Franceschina Full Book and published by BearManor Media. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of American theater would not have developed nor impacted the sound of music today without the composers, directors, and choreographers of incidental and dance music. From the earliest immigrant composers to mainstream maestros and film composers, their successes and sorrows mirrored the masses with failed marriages, alcoholism, earning a living, and dying alone and forgotten. Much of their music was destroyed in fires or lost while touring . . . until now. Elaborating on the introduction and chronology in Volume 1 and the biographical profiles in Volume 2, the author explores the careers of the masterminds of music from Edgar Stillman Kelley to Charles Zimmerman, with more than 150 musical examples and extensive Notes. About the author: composer John Franceschina served as Musical Director for more than 150 shows over 50 years. He served on the Musical Theatre Faculties at Florida State University, Syracuse University, and Pennsylvania State University. His previous published works include Sisters of Gore: Seven Gothic Melodramas by British Women, 1790–1843; Gore on Stage: The Plays of Catherine Gore; Homosexualities in the English Theatre: From Lyly to Wilde; Socialists, Socialites, and Sociopaths: Plays and Screenplays by Frank Tuttle; Rape, Incest, Murder! The Marquis de Sade on Stage (3 volumes); David Braham: The American Offenbach; Harry B. Smith: Dean of American Librettists; Duke Ellington’s Music for the Theatre; Hermes Pan: The Man Who Danced with Fred Astaire; and Music Theory through Musical Theatre.
Download Free Ziegfeld and His Follies PDF by Cynthia Brideson Full Book and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. (1867–1932) is synonymous with the decadent revues that the legendary impresario produced at the turn of the twentieth century. These extravagant performances were filled with catchy tunes, high-kicking chorus girls, striking costumes, and talented stars such as Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Marilyn Miller, W. C. Fields, and Will Rogers. After the success of his Follies, Ziegfeld revolutionized theater performance with the musical Show Boat (1927) and continued making Broadway hits—including Sally (1920), Rio Rita (1927), and The Three Musketeers (1928)—several of which were adapted for the silver screen. In this definitive biography, authors Cynthia Brideson and Sara Brideson offer a comprehensive look at both the life and legacy of the famous producer. Drawing on a wide range of sources—including Ziegfield's previously unpublished letters to his second wife, Billie Burke (who later played Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz), and to his daughter Patricia—the Bridesons shed new light on this enigmatic man. They provide a lively and well-rounded account of Ziegfeld as a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a lover, and an alternately ruthless and benevolent employer. Lavishly illustrated with over seventy-five images, this meticulously researched book presents an intimate and in-depth portrait of a figure who profoundly changed American entertainment.
