Book excerpt: Although the major highlight of this writing is on men and women in modern marital commitments, I also offer recommendations applying to couples looking to improve their lives when a new significant person appears. In certain instances, despite conscientious efforts, beneficial coupling does not inevitably follow. However, my foremost concern is with strengthening weakened ties by identifying problems and taking steps offering healing potential. When things go wrong between two individuals, the relationship is jeopardized. This happens frequently with young people, and those in marriages and romantic affairs. The signs that a relationship is in trouble are not always obvious. It is therefore crucial to recognize “red flags” that manifest warnings. At times the signs look clear, but we fail to notice. This writing cites behaviors that threaten a potentially sound relationship. Moreover, the book addresses what can be done and lists possible resources that help to heal a splintered pair. I would eagerly like to declare that all relationships can be salvaged, but this is simply not the case. The book focuses on traditional relationships but there are alternatives. Alternatives include single individuals in a non-marital state, homosexual males and females, extended families, communes, group marriages and so forth. Strong relationships exist and fall under the closeness of a loving relationship. Certainly marriage options are not new. History clearly demonstrates cultural varieties. The title, WHEN YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER IS NO LONGER SIGNIFICANT! is not intended to illustrate a therapeutic process involved with ameliorating relationships. Rather, it discusses danger signals possibly warranting professional help. When you first commit to the “love of your life,” your mate is the “significant other.” No one is as sensitive, understanding, humorous and loving. The match was undoubtedly made in heaven. That’s the way we would like things to go for life. But what happens? Where did the “loving relationship” problems begin? Did you even know a serious problem existed? No one has a magic bullet or guarantee. But there are common sense “love” approaches.

Moreover, many have written about him likening M.S. Hershey to royalty, such as an Emperor or King of chocolate. However, this is not the Hersheys' greatest achievement. The far more unique, extraordinary and unparalleled achievement of Milton and Catherine Hershey is The Hershey Industrial School. As part of The Hershey Industrial School, the Hersheys created the community, businesses and education system of Hershey, PA. HIS was established in perpetuity for the benefit of American orphans. Hershey Ideal Community for Orphans is about the Hersheys' intelligent philanthropy. A philanthropy that not only benefited all who were a part of it, its beneficiaries are American children who are orphans, and therefore, through no fault of their own, are at risk of suffering a range of undesirable outcomes. The Hersheys were driven by philanthropic effectiveness, measured by the degree to which each individual was able to reach their full potential according to their own characteristics. HIS fully develops each orphan as a whole person according to such child's unique potential through its state-of-the-art program tailored around each individual by transforming him into an adult of exceptional character, prepared to make a living as an adult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Book excerpt: Countless books and articles have traced the impact of colonialism and public policy on Canada's First Nations, but few have explored the impact of Aboriginal thought on public discourse and policy development in Canada. First Nations, First Thoughts brings together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars who cut through the prevailing orthodoxy to reveal Indigenous thinkers and activists as a pervasive presence in diverse political, constitutional, and cultural debates and arenas, including urban spaces, historical texts, public policy, and cultural heritage preservation. This innovative, thought-provoking collection contributes to the decolonization process by encouraging us to imagine a stronger, fairer Canada in which Aboriginal self-government and expression can be fully realized.

Book excerpt: Singularity Hypotheses: A Scientific and Philosophical Assessment offers authoritative, jargon-free essays and critical commentaries on accelerating technological progress and the notion of technological singularity. It focuses on conjectures about the intelligence explosion, transhumanism, and whole brain emulation. Recent years have seen a plethora of forecasts about the profound, disruptive impact that is likely to result from further progress in these areas. Many commentators however doubt the scientific rigor of these forecasts, rejecting them as speculative and unfounded. We therefore invited prominent computer scientists, physicists, philosophers, biologists, economists and other thinkers to assess the singularity hypotheses. Their contributions go beyond speculation, providing deep insights into the main issues and a balanced picture of the debate.

Book excerpt: Choosing a side has never been so dangerous… The world didn't end in fire and explosions, instead it collapsed slowly, like falling dominoes, an intensifying panic of disease, food shortages, wild weather and collapsing economies, until what remains of humanity battles for survival in a harsh new reality. An assassin by trade, a loner by nature, Mercy is sent to infiltrate the Cartels and unmask the identity of their new silent partner. Instead, she discovers a darker plan threatening to crumble the entire Southwest and ends up with a hefty bounty on her head. Still, she's determined to stop the impending attack at any cost, even if it means partnering up with a member of the notorious Fate's Vultures. After enduring a brutal, blood–soaked lesson on the savagery of civilisation's scavengers, Havoc is well acquainted with the consequences of battling predators. But as a member of the nomadic band of arbitrators known as Fate's Vultures, he's determined to cement the necessary alliances to oust the biggest threat looming on the horizon. When an enigmatic woman crosses his path, her secrets and troubling loyalty light the fuse on an unexpected craving and his insatiable curiosity. In order to trap a common foe and derail an impending threat, Havoc and Mercy must turn the tables to hunt a predator. Can an assassin and a mercenary find their balance on the thin line of loyalty, or will it snap under the weight of their wary hearts?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Hazards and Public Choice: The State and Local Politics of Hazard Mitigation presents a research project that emerged from a concern for estimating the balance of support versus opposition to prospective social policies that aim to reduce the risks of damage or injuries from major natural hazard events via the regulation of land use and establishment of building and occupancy standards in high-risk areas. The volume begins with an overview of the research project and the main findings. Separate chapters describe the study design; assess the views of politically influential people regarding the seriousness of natural hazards; measure the support for federal disaster policies; and consider public opinion on hazards-mitigation issues in California. Subsequent chapters cover the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP); patterns of activity, influence, and power among key positions and groups in local communities with respect to issues involving disasters; and hazard mitigation activities at the state level.

This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald M. MacKinnon has been one of the most important and influential of post-war British theologians and religious philosophers. Generally eclectic, frequently allusive, usually intellectually generous, persistently richly challenging and always astonishingly erudite, he had a significant impact on the development and subsequent theological work of the likes of Rowan Williams, Nicholas Lash, David Ford and John Milbank. A younger generation largely emerging from Cambridge, but with influence elsewhere, has more recently brought MacKinnon's normally occasionalist writing to a larger audience worldwide where it is beginning to receive noteworthy attention. In this collection several of MacKinnon's most outstanding papers not yet published in book format is collected together with an Editorial Introduction by a former student of one of MacKinnon's own students. They range from his reflections on theology as educational, the nature of moral reasoning, considerations of ecclesial practice, dogmatics and hope. Here is another reminder of MacKinnon's intellectual brilliance.
