The approaches, as varied as the subject itself, coalesce around the central question of how leaders interact with, transform, or are controlled by the organizations they lead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selecting a leader is a momentous and defining choice for a political party. Leaders symbolize their party and are a primary factor in election outcomes. While much is known about the selection of national party leaders, less is known about the provincial selection process, particularly in the Maritimes. Breaking new ground, Conventional Choices examines twenty-five different leadership elections in three maritime provinces. The analysis draws on an extraordinarily rich data set spanning thirty-two years to explore the backgrounds, attitudes, and motivations of those who select party leaders. It is an impressive study that offers fresh insights into leadership selection and Maritime party politics.

When one is presented with the opportunity to select a political leader, one has to be wise in their selection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how contemporary governing leaders can overcome the typical trend of losing a public support in power by following more effective communication strategies. It shows how new forms of communication that emphasise acknowledgement and respect for public criticisms and concerns can be used by governing leaders to show the public that they still have the leadership qualities they entered office with, despite the extra challenges that political office presents. The book outlines a new model, The Contemporary Governing Leaders' Communication Model, through which leaders can communicate their positive personal and professional qualities in government. The book illustrates this model in use through the communication of United States President Barack Obama and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key during their first terms in political office.

Book excerpt: This book provides a philosophically informed, institutionalist account of political leadership. It is rooted in a certain version of the American pragmatist philosophical tradition and privileges the study of institutions as a cause of leadership outcomes. The book adopts a multi-method approach. It includes a laboratory experiment identifying the psychological effects of presidentialism and parliamentarism on leader behavior; a large-n statistical study of the impact of semi-presidentialism on voter choice; an expert survey of president/cabinet conflict in Europe; an analysis of presidential control over cabinet composition in France; and two in-depth case studies of the circumstances surrounding constitutional choice in France and Romania. This book is aimed at scholars and students of political leadership, political institutions, the philosophy of the social sciences, and research methods. Overall, it shows that an institutional account has the potential to generate well-settled beliefs about the causes of leadership outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PUBLISHING JANURARY 3, 2020! With a focus on presidential leadership, the authors address the capacity of chief executives to fulfill their tasks, exercise their powers, and utilize their organizational structures to affect the output of government. The authors examine all aspects of the presidency in rich detail, including the president’s powers, presidential history, and the institution of the presidency. Guiding their analysis is their unique contrast between two broad perspectives on the presidency—the constrained president (“facilitator”) and the dominant president (“director”)—making the text a perennial favorite for courses on the presidency. The authors richly illustrate their engaging analysis with timely, fascinating examples. They fully integrate the Trump presidency into every chapter, offering wide-ranging coverage. Moreover, they devote separate chapters to essential aspects of President Trump’s approach to governing such as on media relations, leading the public, and decision making. Equally important, they incorporate the most recent scholarship and their own unique approach to show how the Trump presidency illuminates our basic understanding of the presidency, making Presidential Leadership the perfect vehicle for understanding the president and his impact on the office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse, Politics and Women as Global Leaders focuses on the discourse practices of women in global political leadership. It provides a series of discursive studies of women in positions of political leadership. 'Political leadership' is defined as achieving a senior position within a political organization and will often indicate a senior role in government or opposition. The volume draws on a diverse collection of studies from across the globe, reflecting a variety of cultures and distinct polities. The primary aim is to consider in what way(s) discursive practice underpins, reflects, or is appropriated in terms of women's political success and achievements within politics. The chapters employ differing theoretical approaches all bound by the discursive insights they provide, and in terms of their contribution to understanding the role of language and discourse in the construction of gendered identities within political contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Office politics." The term carries a number of negative connotations - hyper-ambition, deceitful maneuvering, favor trading, responsibility skirted, and rewards unearned. But not all uses of office politics are ethically out of bounds. In fact, the smart use of interpersonal power in group situations is a key to success for the individual and the organization - any organization. In 1993, the first edition of Organizational Power Politics: Tactics in Organizational Leadership was named an Oustanding Academic Book by Choice magazine. Now this acclaimed book returns in a fully updated second edition that gives readers proven strategies for using power to achieve personal and group objectives at work and in social, religious, military, and other contexts. Based on extensive research, Organizational Power Politics reviews present and past power-use theory, updates it, and proposes a practical power-use model both leader and led can use to sway others. It identifies the range of strategic orientations the power user might adopt, and it suggests a three-part strategy for using power. At the book's heart are 22 specific power tactics, applicable to a wide range of organizations and situations. Like the previous edition, this updated version provides clear, direct, and specific modes of behavior group members can use to get others to do what they want, even in the face of their opposition. Two new chapters look at the use of power in multinational work groups and among the middle layers of large-scale organizations. Activities, self-evaluations, case studies, and discussion questions are all included to help readers sharpen their power skills. Everybody uses power; it is a constituent part of all business and social relationships. With Organizational Power Politics, Second Edition in hand, you can assess your power skills - and hone them to increase your success in all walks of life. -- from dust jacket.
