Book excerpt: Warfare was an integral part of the operations of the medieval eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, both in its organization, as well as in social thinking and political ideology. This volume presents a selection of articles dealing with key aspects of Byzantine attitudes to war and violence, with military administration and organization at tactical and strategic levels, weapons and armaments and war-making itself; discussions which make an important contribution to answering the questions of how and why the empire survived as long as it did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about young colts and fillies learning to be race horses takes place on a small farm in Indiana. The farm has a half-mile training track surrounded by a woods pasture, hay fields, and various small lots used for keeping the horses outdoors. It has one main horse barn with stalls for training the horses, a second large white barn for equipment and hay, and a small shed with extra stalls. The farm is owned by Pops and his wife Grams. Many of the stories relate to the work Pops does with the horses. Pops has broodmares who give birth to their colts in early spring. Grams, Pops' usual helper, leads the mares while he begins breaking their colts to lead, drive, and prepare for racing. The main character for these stories is Liz, their granddaughter, who lives on the next farm, a small distance from Pops' race barn. Liz loves the horses, especially the foals. She enjoys naming them and talking to them. Liz has many adventures with Pops and writes letters to tell her cousins what is happening at the farm. One mare and her four fillies born over a four-year period give Pops all he can handle. Their individual habits and unusual personalities present interesting situations. Pops wanted horses with spunk, and they pour it out daily. Pops must fully concentrate to overcome their habits and train them properly. Liz grows up knowing happiness and excitement, as well as sadness and heartache. These young colts and the mares who mother them present all sorts of life lessons for Pops, Grams, and especially for young Liz. This book tells Liz's story as she lives near Pops' farm, knowing these lively horses. The farm is owned by Pops and his wife Grams. Many of the stories relate to the work Pops does with the horses. Book excerpt: Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Infrastructures: Challenges and Opportunities reveals how environmental research infrastructures (RIs) provide new valuable insights on ecological processes that cannot be realized by more traditional short-term funding cycles and are integral to understand our changing world. This book bonds the latest state-of-the-science knowledge on environmental RIs, the challenges in creating them, their place in addressing scientific frontiers, and the new perspectives they bear. Each chapter is thoughtfully invested with fresh viewpoints from the environmental RI vantage as the authors explore and explain many topics such as the rationale and challenges in global change, field and modeling platforms, new tools, challenges in data management, distilling information into knowledge, and new developments in large-scale RIs. This work serves an advantageous guide for academics and practitioners alike who aim to deepen their knowledge in the field of science and project management, and logistics operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 10 May 1940, the French possessed one of the largest air forces in the world. On paper, it was nearly as strong as the RAF. Six weeks later, France had been defeated. For a struggling French Army desperately looking for air support, the skies seemed empty of friendly planes. In the decades that followed, the debate raged. Were there unused stockpiles of planes? Were French aircraft really so inferior? Baughen examines the myths that surround the French defeat. He explains how at the end of the First World War, the French had possessed the most effective air force in the world, only for the lessons learned to be forgotten. Instead, air policy was guided by radical theories that predicted air power alone would decide future wars. Baughen traces some of the problems back to the very earliest days of French aviation. He describes the mistakes and bad luck that dogged the French efforts to modernise their air force in the twenties and thirties. He examines how decisions made just months before the German attack further weakened the air force. Yet defeat was not inevitable. If better use had been made of the planes that were available, the result might have been different.

This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a fully semiconductor-based laser source that meets the requirements of coherent optical communication links in space and further allows to benefit from the numerous advantages of semiconductor lasers. A hybrid master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) concept enables narrow-linewidth high-power operation. The experimental part of this thesis describes how the linewidth of the laser sources is characterized with a beat note measurement technique. A novel heterodyne linewidth measurement setup with a weak frequency lock of the two lasers features a virtually unlimited resolution. The analysis of the beat note signal is carried out by evaluating radio frequency beat note spectra as well as frequency noise spectra. Further, the characteristics of DFB and DBR lasers optimized for narrow linewidth operation are compared in terms of spectral stability, linewidth, and performance in a master oscillator power amplifier system. DBR lasers with an overall length of 4mm and a front facet reflectivity of 30% feature an intrinsic linewidth of 2 kHz at 180mW and a FWHM linewidth as small as 180 kHz up to an output power of 180mW. An intrinsic linewidth of 2 kHz is, to our knowledge, the smallest linewidth that has been reported in the literature so far. The concept of a hybrid integrated MOPA has been developed and the assembly procedure and the characteristics of the micro-integrated MOPA system are presented. The MOPA is realized on a footprint of 10 x 5mm2. The MOPA system features an output power of more than 1W, a FWHM linewidth of 100 kHz and an intrinsic linewidth of 3.6 kHz. To our knowledge, this is the first micro-integrated MOPA concept that simultaneously features narrow linewidth and addresses the requirements of spaceborne laser sources like mechanical stability, compactness, and efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What suspects tell the police may become a crucial piece of evidence when the case comes to court. But what happens to 'the suspect's statement' when it is written down by the police? Based on a unique set of data from over fifteen years' worth of research, Martha Komter examines the trajectory of the suspect's statement from the police interrogation through to the trial. She shows how the suspect's statement is elicited and written down in the police report, how this police report both represents and differs from the original talk in the interrogation, and how it is quoted and referred to in court. The analyses cover interactions in multiple settings, with documents that link one interaction to the next, providing insights into the interactional and documentary foundations of the criminal process and, more generally, into the construction, character and uses of documents in institutional settings.
