Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative new study, Laura Halperin examines literary representations of harm inflicted on Latinas’ minds and bodies, and on the places Latinas inhabit, but she also explores how hope can be found amid so much harm. Analyzing contemporary memoirs and novels by Irene Vilar, Loida Maritza Pérez, Ana Castillo, Cristina García, and Julia Alvarez, she argues that the individual harm experienced by Latinas needs to be understood in relation to the collective histories of aggression against their communities. Intersections of Harm is more than just a nuanced examination of the intersections among race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. It also explores the intersections of deviance and defiance, individual and collective, and mind, body, and place. Halperin proposes that, ironically, the harmful ascriptions of Latina deviance are tied to the hopeful expressions of Latina defiance. While the Latina protagonists’ defiance feeds into the labels of deviance imposed on them, it also fuels the protagonists’ ability to resist such harmful treatment. In this analysis, Halperin broadens the parameters of literary studies of female madness, as she compels us to shift our understanding of where madness lies. She insists that the madness readily attributed to individual Latinas is entwined with the madness of institutional structures of oppression, and she maintains that psychological harm is bound together with physical and geopolitical harm. In her pan-Latina study, Halperin shows how each writer’s work emerges from a unique set of locales and histories, but she also traces a network of connections among them. Bringing together concepts from feminism, postcolonialism, illness studies, and ecocriticism, Intersections of Harm opens up exciting new avenues for Latina/o studies.

If you enjoy shows like The Walking Dead and Z-Nation, you will love Bone Music. Reed Business Information - Publishers Weekly Through colloquial prose that's strong and perfectly pitched, Rodgers combines elements of horror (sometimes graphic), fantasy and magical realism into a unique novel that's not only an occult standout but a captivating memoir of an important slice of American culture.

Book excerpt: Relevant driving forces during this last hundred years include: computers, like the PC, the web, and supercomputers; genetics, cloning, stem cells, DNA insertions into food crops; energy needs; environmental concerns; gender equality, religion. Technology is rapidly reaching a crescendo. It will either utterly transform us as it has in the past, or it will be the downfall of Homo sapiens. Most religions predict an end, disastrous in size and scope, followed by a mystic spiritual alteration. Many of these same faiths believe that this event is coming very soon. History follows patterns. Just as the Americas developed, so will space. Are we going to break the loop of rise and fall now or ever? Do we resolve our worldwide political differences? Are we entering into a new Utopia or find ourselves mired in an anti-Utopia. How did it all begin? Where are we now? What do we face tomorrow? All of these concerns and more point toward a paradigm shift in mental and physical human evolution, or an end to humankind. Is it a new beginning or the complete end of man? Red and Walter are on the forefront of the battle against time and the universe. They are the final hopes of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming Student Travel calls for a paradigm shift in the student tour industry: educators collaborating to create a student-centered, inquiry-based tour. Marcel Proust said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” This resource guide explores ways educators can encourage students not only to see with “new eyes,” but also to understand how they know. The International Baccalaureate informs the first part of the book which includes educational research as well as practical suggestions for improving the tour experience, including an integration of academic subjects. Although much has been written about the impact of international travel, this book explores ways educators can transform domestic tours for public and parochial school students. The second part of the book offers resource guides for four cities – Washington, D.C.; New York; Philadelphia; and Boston. Teachers, tour directors, and tour operators, will find discussion questions activities as well as detailed background information for four of the most visited cities by students. Many of the questions and strategies can be adapted for other landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOCKDOWN! That shocking word ushered in a surreal time for Lois Larkey. It was March 11, 2020, and there was a pandemic, a killing virus, the first in one hundred years. Like everyone else, Lois had to shelter in place, wear a mask and totally separate from friends and family. Living alone in her apartment she was afraid of catching Covid-19 and dying alone in a hospital. She had to find something that would help her work through her fears. The idea of chronicling the tragedy, brought on by a virus and exacerbated by a divisive president, was compelling. Lois began writing her blog, The Larkey Lowdown, with an eye to capturing unfolding history. The election of 2020 brought a bizarre rejection of the longtime American tradition of “peaceful transfer of power.’ Lois kept writing. January 6th brought the violent storming of the Capitol in the name of the president who lost the election. Our democracy was threatened. Lois, horrified and heartbroken, kept writing. January 20th, the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, brought a new administration and hope for the future. Inauguration Day signaled an optimistic time to lay down her pan and search for perspective. Diary of a Dystopian Era is a fascinating collection of Lois Larkey’s blog entries that describe the tumultuous events of the years 2020-2021 in real time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fandom is generally viewed as an integral part of everyday life which impacts upon how we form emotional bonds with ourselves and others in a modern, mediated world. Whilst it is inevitable for television series to draw to a close, the reactions of fans have rarely been considered. Williams explores this everyday occurence through close analysis of television fans to examine how they respond to, discuss, and work through their feelings when shows finish airing. Through a range of case studies, including The West Wing (NBC, 2000-2006), Lost (ABC 2004 -2010), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Doctor Who (BBC 1963-1989; 2005-), The X-Files (FOX, 1993-2002), Firefly (FOX, 2002) and Sex and the City (HBO, 1998-2004), Williams considers how fans prepare for the final episodes of shows, how they talk about this experience with fellow fans, and how, through re-viewing, discussion and other fan practices, they seek to maintain their fandom after the show's cessation.

Book excerpt: The emotional and complex legacy of September 11, 2001, made the efforts to rebuild the World Trade Center site an unprecedented challenge for the architecture profession. What ensued at Ground Zero was to be an amalgam of programmatic, urbanistic, design and political elements, produced in a charged atmosphere - with the world watching. This book chronicles the work of one team of designers. THINK, a collaboration of four distinguished principals: Shigeru Ban, Ken Smith, Frederic Schwartz and Rafael Vinoly, was a finalist in the master planning competition. From each designer's immediate response to the loss of the Twin Towers, to the team's work for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation's Innovative Design Study, this book covers the eighteen month period between the attacks and the selection of a master plan in February 2003.

Book excerpt: She Persisted: One Hundred Monologues from Plays by Women over Forty is a collection of monologues from plays by members of Honor Roll!, an advocacy group of women over forty. About Honor Roll!: "Honor Roll! is an advocacy and action group of women+ playwrights over forty—and our allies—whose goal is our inclusion in theater. The term "women+" refers to a spectrum of gender identification that includes women, non-binary identifiers, and trans. We are the generation excluded at the outset of our careers because of sexism, now overlooked because of ageism. We celebrate diversity in theater, and work to call attention to the negative impact of age discrimination alongside gender, race, ethnicity, faith, socioeconomic status, disability, and sexual orientation in the American Theatre and beyond." "These women are in their forties and fifties and sixties, and they have been writing a long time, and they are at the height of their craft. These are tight, complex, nuanced pieces of writing, which no one has seen because for too long they weren't looking. These are important writers, and important plays." —Theresa Rebeck, from the introduction

Book excerpt: On the second ring, the man raised the phone to his ear and in a low voice, said, "Proceed." A few seconds later, he placed the phone back in its cradle and turned to his visitor. With no emotion in his voice, he said, "It seems we have lost the team. All but the driver of the vehicle are probably dead. Is there any way our operatives can be identified?" "No, Sir," the visitor replied. "All the assassins have had plastic surgery and finger prints cannot be obtained, because there are none. DNA testing is a possibility, but would take more time than they have available." "Well, we knew when we started this that it wouldn't be easy, but we can't afford any more debacles." His voice became harder, "Within two weeks, our mission will be completed, and, if the president is still alive under that mountain, he's to stay there-at least for the next fourteen days. After that, it won't matter. See to it!"
