Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Naval Defence The value of the kind of studies embraced in these essays in enabling us to make correct forecasts was set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, so far as sail power, very heavy guns, classification of ships, and the leading principles of Imperial defence were concerned. There was a lament over our failure to study the question of naval tactics seriously, and by the use of the inductive method and a fear was expressed lest such neglect might some day land us in trouble. No war had then occurred to test any of the tactical forecasts made in the last two chapters, and so nothing could be shown in the way of experiment to justify the method pursued in that domain of naval science. But since then the Battle of Yalu has been fought. Clearing the nature of the battle from side issues, we may say that it was a trial of strength between two tactical formations - the "line abreast," which, in the military phrase adopted by Captain Bainbridge-Hoff of the United States Navy, would be "line"; and the "line-ahead," which, in the language of the same authority, would be "column." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small power diplomacy in seventeenth century Europe War, State and Society in Liège is a fascinating case study of the consequences of war in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and touches upon wider issues in early modern history, such as small power diplomacy in the seventeenth century and during the Nine Years’ War. For centuries, the small semi-independent Holy Roman Principality of Liège succeeded in preserving a non-belligerent role in European conflicts. During the Nine Years’ War (1688–1697), however, Liège’s leaders had to abolish the practice of neutrality. For the first time in its early modern history, the Prince-Bishopric had to raise a regular army, reconstruct ruined defence structures, and supply army contributions in both money and material. The issues under discussion in War, State and Society in Liège offer the reader insight into how Liège politically protected its powerful institutions and how the local elite tried to influence the interplay between domestic and external diplomatic relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1911, Sir Julian's Corbett's Some Principles of Maritime Strategy has remained a key document within naval strategic thinking. Yet despite his undoubted influence, Corbett's theories have not been subjected to scientific review and systematic comparison with other naval thinkers. In this assessment, Dr Wid(r)n has provided a fresh interpretation of Corbett's legacy and his continued relevance as a classic theorist of naval war. Both the strengths and shortcomings of Corbett's thinking are discussed and reflections offered on their intellectual, practical and doctrinal value. In so doing, Dr Widen has written a book that deserves to be read by anyone with an interest in the past, present or future of maritime strategy.
