Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open this book and read whatever chapter appears and you will be transported back in time – Tardis style – into village life around Pertenhall and Kimbolton over the last 80 years. You will immediately become part of the scene. Claude Banks treats readers to a rich potpourri of stories of village life with a wicked eye for detail… Feel the austerity of the agricultural depression leading up to World War 2. Giggle at the exploits of the local cricketers and footballers; we imagine we are in Claude's classroom at Kimbolton Grammar School in the late 1930s. Stories are told with understated humour, including his recollections of service in the Home Guard under the command of a real life Captain Mainwaring. Indeed, all seemed to change with the advent of World War 2, especially with the influx of American Air Force personnel and how they brightened up local village life, soon to be followed by Italian and German prisoners of war who worked on the land. There are many, often inadvertent, comparisons to life as it is now. Whilst appreciative of past times Claude is not wedded to them and shows huge adaptability to the challenges that every decade has put before him. He is a true old fashioned naturalist and treats readers to stories about nature and country pursuits – especially shooting and horse racing. Overall, the book provides superb insights into past country life with its full range of joy and tears, and a cast of characters that Chaucer would have been proud of!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Boldt was born in Clayton, New York, a village with approximately eighteen hundred citizens, nearly as many dogs, and two seasons—August and winter. Throughout his childhood, George learned to rely on advice from his grandmother and her brother to help him navigate through the challenges of growing up. But everything changed the day his great uncle unexpectedly gave him the title to his beloved houseboat and asked him to transform it into a clubhouse for local boys. In a life story that he proclaims is sixty-seven percent true, George leads others down an amusing path through his memories as he plays on his inherited houseboat, learns about girls, and meets a lively band of characters that include Captain Prunes Percy, Woodchuck Monoe, Flashlight Fulton, and Cowboy Unmanly. As he details his move into adolescence and beyond, George provides a glimpse into a life full of adventure and his determined pursuit to keep his uncle’s dream alive. In this fictionalized memoir, one man chronicles his unique, often humorous coming-of-age journey through life as he grows up, attempts to find his place in the world, and contemplates whether he can really ever go back in time to his enchanted boyhood!

Download Free Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases PDF by Bartlett Jere Whiting Full Book and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Over £5000 was raised for two local churches from sales of the book. Claude's readers are clamouring for another book – and here it is! During the writing of this second book, sadly Claude lost his wife of 60 years and in December 2015 faced a second major operation. Claude is not as active as he was (not surprising at 90!) – but his mind is still all there and the stories keep coming!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of a Boy! By: John Dwight Marchalleck John Dwight Marchalleck was born in the parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica. At the age of three, his mother migrated to the U.S.A. and his new guardian parents, her mom and dad, became the main lifelong influence for John as reflected in The Story of a Boy! John was a happy child, growing up with his grandmother and grandfather. In this book, he reflects on hardships like drought affecting his hometown mountain village from time to time. His farmer grandfather and philanthropic grandmother were his primary tutors and idols. His grandfather was a storyteller who provided candy for the village children who stopped by to visit and listen. Like many grandchildren, John was sent away to boarding school and later to attend high school in Kingston but continued to communicate with them through written letters, a habit encouraged by his grandma. While in high school, his fondness for writing was also reflected by mystery stories John wrote and were aired on JBC (Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation). That earned the boy extra pocket money. But this fostered bad habits, as John began to frequent the billiard halls in Kingston, which prevented him from going home directly after school. This was reported to the headmaster, who meted out fifty-page homework essays for John in lieu of other detention to curb the boy’s after-school bad habits. This enhanced John’s appetite more for writing; however, rather than stop him playing billiards or frequenting the pool halls, the boy could effortlessly produce written assignments, on most given topics, free of grammatical errors. In 1963 John migrated and joined his biological mom in the U.S.A. Later, as a student at the Benjamin Franklin School of Accounting and Finance in Washington, D.C., John worked and published articles in both the National Geographic Society’s School and News Services. A long drought in writing from John came, however, but now The Story of a Boy! can be happily shared with the world.

Book excerpt: It was Edgar Allan Poe who inspired me in grade school to become a writer. The way he expressed himself in his poem, the birds have never left my spirit . I wished, as a child, he could have read to me this great work in person. So I tried my version of poetic melodies in my first book entitled McJoy's Melodies. But in moving ahead, one book wasn't enough. With pen and paper in hand, once again, I was inspired to write again. No poetry this time, rather an autobiography of sorts about my dear old dad. He was bigger than life itself. Dad not only told a story; he was quite the character. If any one of you out there had been fortunate enough to meet the king of the south, the real doaEUR"right man, you'd say along with me, "Old Willie McJoy was quite the guy." And well liked and respected among his peers. Truly he must be the real Mccoy. Ain't that right, Willie? Willie McJoy.

When you define yourself by your characteristics and not your age or status, you will come face to face with YOU! "Who am I? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reach for the Stars is the memoir of the twenty-first century mystic Mark Janssen. Here he describes his earliest memories of conversations in his crib with God, Mary, Jesus and angels and saints. Originally from a small rural town in the Upper Midwest, Mark was raised in a traditional Catholic family. This book talks about how he was strongly discouraged from pursuing the development of his unfolding mystical abilities even as a small child. It was from his maternal grandmother that he learned he was descended from many generations of mystics. She taught and encouraged Mark to always be in contact with the angels. His grandmother instructed him to always listen to them and to God. Here we read how the author grew into adulthood with the spiritual guidance of his guardian angel St. Michael the Archangel. With Michael's assistance, Mark learned about many different sorts of angels, good and evil. Unexpectedly, while still in high school, Michael and the angels worked with him on his first exorcism. We read about Mark's surprise that others around him did not communicate with God, angels and demons. How he saw the spirits of those buried in the cemetery behind his childhood home. How Mark carried his mystical gifts with him into adulthood. We read about his experiences as an ordinary member of society and during his time as a Benedictine monk. Along with using the gifts we normally associate with psychics, Mark has found himself performing spirit clearings, exorcisms and healings. He has spoken to people one on one and in large groups about his experiences as a mystic. Mark Janssen has written Reach for the Stars to assure others that their paths through life are always with the love and companionship of their guardian angels. As a mystic child he was greatly blessed to have his grandmother to support him. He wishes to offer that same reassurance to children and adults. His belief is that we can all see God and our guardian angels. This is one man's story of how it came to be for him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four distinct anthracite coal fields encompass an area of 1,700 square miles in the northeastern portion of Pennsylvania. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, underground coal mining was at its zenith and the work of miners was more grueling and dangerous than it is today. Faces blackened by coal and helmet lamps lit by fire are no longer parts of the everyday lives of miners in the region. Early Coal Mining in the Anthracite Region is a journey into a world that was once very familiar. These vintage photographs of collieries, breakers, miners, drivers, and breaker boys illuminate the dark of the anthracite mines. The pictures of miners, roof falls, mules, and equipment deep underground tell the story of the hard lives lived around the hard coal. Above ground, breaker boys toiled in unbearable conditions inside the noisy, vibrating, soot-filled monsters known as coal breakers.
