Book excerpt: "From the title, I thought this was a book to help me deal with my brother's bi-polar disorder, because he's spiraling down very quickly and I needed immediate assistance. He's dead now, but man, this book was funny!" --Adam Heath Avitable, author of Avitable.com "This book is good birth control. It will also make you laugh like hell. You should buy it because it's hard to find that kind of combination without a medical prescription." --Jenny Lawson, TheBloggess.com "Shauna Glenn is from that rare breed of authors who can make you laugh until you cry even when she's writing about the most raw and visceral human emotions. Driven by heart and hilarity, RELATIVE INSANITY might just be Shauna's best novel yet." --Danny Evans, author of RAGE AGAINST THE MESHUGENAH

Book excerpt: Is insanity a myth? Does it exist merely to keep psychiatrists in business? In Insanity: The Idea and Its Consequences, Dr. Szasz challenges the way both science and society define insanity; in the process, he helps us better understand this often misunderstood condition. Dr. Szasz presents a carefully crafted account of the insanity concept and shows how it relates to and differs from three closely allied ideas—bodily illness, social deviance, and the sick role.

Download Free Responsibility in Law and Morality PDF by Peter Cane Full Book and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-04-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers who write about responsibility tend to focus on criminal law at the expense of civil and public law; while philosophers tend to treat responsibility as a moral concept, and either ignore the law or consider legal responsibility to be a more or less distorted reflection of its moral counterpart. This book aims to counteract both of these biases. By adopting a comparative institutional approach to the relationship between law and morality, it challenges the common view that morality stands to law as critical standard to conventional practice. It shows how law and morality interact symbiotically, and how careful study of legal concepts of responsibility can add significantly to our understanding of responsibility more generally. Central to this project is a distinction between two paradigms of responsibility -- the criminal law paradigm and the civil law paradigm. Whereas theoretical discussions of responsibility tend focus on conduct and agency, taking account of civil law reveals the importance of outcomes and the interests of victims and society to ideas of responsibility. The book examines from a distinctively legal point of view central philosophical questions about responsibility such as its relationship with culpability (challenging the common view that moral responsibility requires fault), causation and personality. It explores the relevance of sanctions and problems of proof and enforcement to ideas of responsibility, as well as the relationship between responsibility and distributive justice, and the role of concepts of responsibility in public law. At the heart of this book lie two questions: what does it mean to say we are responsible? and, what are our responsibilities? Its aim is not to answer these questions but to challenge some traditional approaches to answering them and more importantly, to suggest fruitful alternative approaches that take law seriously.

"I'm perfectly happy with the man in my life." After spending more than ten years working with thousands of women, nationally acclaimed lecturer and bestselling author Ellen Sue Stern is convinced that deep within every woman's heart, that ideal is what she yearns for. The good news is that despite their discontent, the majority of women remain committed to the possibility of improving their relationships. The bad news is that many women are starting to run out of ideas, patience...and time. Put yourself in charge -- now -- and stop waiting for your partner to fulfill your dreams. Loving an Imperfect Man is the winning blueprint to discovering how to love and accept your man for who he is...and reinvest your energy toward becoming the strong, powerful, and deserving woman you truly are.

Book excerpt: Light through a prism, and we see colour. Hues and shades, sensations of emotions, all crafted into lyrical words. Colours of Poetry takes verse and makes it visual, linking poems to the rainbow spectrum. Each section crafts the poetry in tandem to a theme, from a sapphire sea, to the first hint of sunshine on a lemon tinted daybreak. Colour is all around, enveloping our lives and feelings. Through tinted shades we see the world, with emotional ties that bind.

Download Free The War Game, New Expanded Edition PDF by Irving Louis Horowitz Full Book and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War gaming has become a characteristic feature of modern life. From amateur clubs to professional academicians playing the war game in the company of military circles, we have come up against the phenomenon of the "robotization" of human life. Irving Louis Horowitz argues that those who protest the idea that war is a game do so on moral grounds that leave unanswered tough questions: What is the alternative to playing the game? What will become of us if we allow the opponent to become the better "player" in an all-or-nothing game of extinction? Horowitz provides answers in a logical manner while focusing on facts and ethical alternatives to risky ethics. The work is divided into three sections: The New Civilian Militarists, Thermonuclear Peace and Its Political Equivalents, and General Theory of Conflict and Conflict Resolution. Included are such topics as arms, policies, and games; morals, missiles, and militarism; and conflict, consensus, and cooperation. Horowitz concludes that it is time to register the fact that the basic option to destructive uses of science is not traditional morality, but better science--a science of survival. With a new introduction by Howard Schneiderman along with a major essay and other materials not included in the original edition, this classic work is a worthy contribution to intellectual debate in the twenty-first century and a must read for military strategists, sociologists, and historians.
