Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why Communion is practiced differently from one place to another or often not at all? Maybe you learned about it at an early age or were introduced to it later when you began following Jesus as an adult. Today, many Christians practice the sacrament of Communion (though not all) and have never been introduced to the history and significance behind what Jesus instituted for us at the Last Supper. Most understand its significance, yet only as it leads one back to the Cross. But why the Cross? Why did Jesus choose the very specific Jewish festival of Passover as the setting for changing the world? And more importantly, why did He have to die? Whatever your beliefs or understandings about Communion (or the Lord's Supper), take a walk with the author on the journey of discovery down the roads of tradition and truth to unveil God's amazing purpose for the Church through the practice of Communion and why He wants to be sure you experience it too. Presented in a thoughtful yet lighthearted tone, So What's the Big Deal About Communion? leads readers in understanding and unraveling many of the myths and traditions surrounding this special and important meal and, more importantly, helps us all to more effectively prepare for and enjoy this unique gift of Jesus to all His followers.

Book excerpt: Second Place, Liturgy category Catholic Press Association book awards, 2012 “This little book is a gem!” From Sunday Mass to Monday mayhem: Can the central act of Catholic worship transform our daily lives? In the United States, only 25% of self-proclaimed Catholics attend Mass on a weekly basis. Many Catholics believe that far more people would attend if only the homilies were better, or the music were more inspiring, or . . . the list goes on. But best-selling authors Fr. Dominic Grassi and Joe Paprocki are convinced that the real problem lies not in the Mass itself but in a lack of understanding of how the Mass prepares each person to live day in and day out as a baptized Catholic Christian. In Living the Mass, Grassi and Paprocki show how each part of the Mass relates to our baptismal call, closing the chasm between Sunday Mass and daily life. This newly revised edition takes into account the changes in the new Roman Missal, yet rather than isolating those texts or commenting on them, the authors have integrated the changes seamlessly into the book. This assimilation ensures that readers stay focused on the core message of the book—how the Mass as a whole changes us—rather than become sidetracked by the Missal’s new texts. Ideal for the countless Catholics who attend Mass simply out of habit, for the many who haven’t been to Mass in a while, or for anyone seeking to join the Catholic Church, Living the Mass compellingly demonstrates how the one hour spent at Mass on Sunday can truly transform the other 167 hours of the week.

Book excerpt: This accessible yet comprehensive primer explores the breadth of viewpoints on major issues in evangelical theology by examining positions taken by evangelicals on seventeen seminal issues. The second edition retains the helpful features of the first edition and adds an appendix that addresses thirteen peripheral issues in contemporary evangelicalism. Praise for the first edition "The authors do what no book on the market does: In one volume they faithfully present divergent views on the crucial issues that divide evangelicals, and they do so in an unbiased, succinct, and lively manner. This book is perfect as a supplemental text in an introductory theology course or as a manual for church study groups. It will help everyone arrive at his or her own conclusions within the parameters of the evangelical tradition."--Dennis Okholm, Azusa Pacific University "Across the Spectrum succeeds with distinction in at least two respects. First, it represents a very useful tool for those who wish to begin grappling with different approaches to difficult theological problems. The book will be most helpful to beginning students in evangelical theology, the target audience. Second, the work presents various perspectives in fair and unbiased tones. . . . If used with care, it will repeatedly reward the reader with its fair and even treatment of different theological views."--Nathan D. Holsteen, Bibliotheca Sacra "I've been waiting for this book for some time. Due to its brief, nontechnical format, it can be used in a variety of ways in undergraduate theology courses. Although a concise volume, it succinctly outlines multiple arguments, both pro and con, for (incredibly!) over two dozen issues in disputed, largely non-fundamental areas of doctrine. The professor can present positions in favor of particular views or leave the issues open. It's settled--I'm requiring it!"--Gary R. Habermas, Liberty University "A collective sigh of relief will arise from the evangelical student body when it discovers this book! It helpfully and critically surveys the many legitimate evangelical theological options and convincingly demonstrates that there is no single authentically evangelical viewpoint on a wide range of controversial issues. It constitutes a small library between two covers."--Roger E. Olson, George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University

Book excerpt: This book is about the life of a little boy born during WW II raised on a sugarcane plantation in Southern Louisiana. These were hard times for poor folks who had to work very hard to earn meager living wages to support their families. Although money was scarce, living and working on the land allowed you to grow and raise much of your food, which the city people could not do. Generally, one had food or the means to get food if you were inclined to do so by working extra time on the land, provide it was after your normal work day was completed. Some landowners would not allow workers to use their land for gardens. Times were hard, and folks were poor, but most of us did not know we were poor because all of our friends and neighbors had the same things; we had nothing. You made the most of what you did have. It was a simple time when you could grow your own food and make your own toys to entertain yourself and your friends. As a youngster, I had plenty fun times, growing up on the plantation. This book is about some of those times as best as I can recall them. Most of this book is written in the manner that we talked before education came into play. If this story were told with proper English and punctuation, the reader would miss out on the flavor of the times of these happenings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical Theology is a systematic theology written from the perspective of a biblical scholar. Michael F. Bird contends that the center, unity, and boundary of the evangelical faith is the evangel (= gospel), as opposed to things like justification by faith or inerrancy. The evangel is the unifying thread in evangelical theology and the theological hermeneutic through which the various loci of theology need to be understood. Using the gospel as a theological leitmotif—an approach to Christian doctrine that begins with the gospel and sees each loci through the lens of the gospel—this text presents an authentically evangelical theology, as opposed to an ordinary systematic theology written by an evangelical theologian. According to the author, theology is the drama of gospelizing—performing and living out the gospel in the theatre of Christian life. The text features tables, sidebars, and questions for discussion. The end of every part includes a “What to Take Home” section that gives students a run-down on what they need to know. And since reading theology can often be dry and cerebral, the author applies his unique sense of humor in occasional “Comic Belief” sections so that students may enjoy their learning experience through some theological humor added for good measure.

Book excerpt: Set in late-1950s Los Angeles, the Easter Bunny Conspiracy is a grippingly funny coming-of-age tale told from the point of view of a precocious 12 year-old Catholic boy, Chris Kelly. Chris is struggling to find himself despite the burdens of his being as overweight as he is obsessed with and equally confused by girls, being as agnostic as he is Catholic, and as unsure as he is (almost) poised about coping with all the crazy but accepted traditions, customs, prejudices, contradictions and hypocrisies with which hes confronted each day. Chris problem is that he hasnt yet figured out that hes right to be confused about everyone around him so readily accepting being grounded in one way or another on deceits such as what Chris calls that Easter Bunny thing. Chris needs are simple - just to make his way in the world. Aided by flashbacks on his own experiences, Chris story is about his overcoming the fiery crucible of the 3 days before his Confirmation, which enable him to reach his personal epiphany and stride with semi-confidence into his still-uncertain future with an ethically tolerable plan. Our voyage through these stormy adolescent seas is at once poignant and hilarious. Its bittersweet comedy at its best. You cant help but love it.

Book excerpt: At times funny, poignant, and heartbreaking, Midlife Irish draws on the universal themes of love, loss, and laughter that have kept the Irish both miserable and happy--often at the same time--throughout the years. If Bill Bryson set off for Ireland to discover his roots, then you'd have Midlife Irish--an illuminating, entertaining, and heartwarming look at one man's search for where--and who--he came from. Irish-American. What does this vague term really mean? Millions of people describe themselves as Irish-American, but beyond celebrating St. Patrick's Day with a drunken zeal, how many of them know really anything about their cultural ancestry? It is this curiosity that got the better of Frank Gannon--the son of a couple of straight-off-the-boat Irish immigrants. His mother and father, who never spoke about life on the Emerald Isle, raised him in New Jersey, thousands of miles from Ireland. But after both his parents passed away, he realized he knew nothing about whom they really were and where they came from--and in effect, where he came from. Now at the half-way point in his life, Gannon decided to fill in the blanks. He embarked on a journey to Planet Green and slowly pieced together the lives of his parents. Before long, he discovered much about his mother and father, and just as much about himself. This story of one man's search for his cultural identity will have phones ringing off the hook at the Irish Board of Tourism, as readers will want to take off

This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950s Chicago, a boy hides in his closet to escape a father's habitual rage. There he conjures up another paternal figure in his artistic Italian grandfather, Canio Grieco. With his wondrous tricks and stories of "Italy," his library and drawings, his baseball and opera, Canio becomes the model of creativity for the lonely, introverted grandson who learns to survive through ingenuity, imagination, and electricity. Canio's Secret is a coming-of-age story about young Greg's struggle to find solace in his mother's Catholicism and break free of his father's anger. Told through intimate portraits of parents and grandparents, nuns and janitors, friends and local characters, and their unsettling, often humorous, encounters, it is also the vibrant portrait of a multi-ethnic neighborhood soon to be scattered by white flight. As the older writer ponders his grandfather's influence, the memoir becomes a meditation on Canio's enigmatic advice, spoken in the summer of 1953: "Happiness is all that's required."
