Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download Free Cold War Ecology PDF by Arvid Nelson Full Book and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Germany, its economy, and its society were in decline long before the country’s political collapse in the late 1980s. The clues were there in the natural landscape, Arvid Nelson argues in this groundbreaking book, but policy analysts were blind to them. Had they noted the record of the leadership’s values and goals manifest in the landscape, they wouldn’t have hailed East Germany as a Marxist-Leninist success story. Nelson sets East German history within the context of the landscape history of two centuries to underscore how forest and ecosystem change offered a reliable barometer to the health and stability of the political system that governed them. Cold War Ecology records how East German leaders’ indifference to human rights and their disregard for the landscape affected the rural economy, forests, and population. This lesson from history suggests new ways of thinking about the health of ecosystems and landscapes, Nelson shows, and he proposes assessing the stability of modern political systems based on the environment’s system qualities rather than on political leaders’ goals and beliefs.

Download Free Thinking About Social Policy PDF by Franz-Xaver Kaufmann Full Book and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the political history of the concept of social policy. „Social policy“ originated in Germany in the mid 19th century as a scholarly term that made a career in politics. The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.

Der Band enthalt Studien zu Medea-Bildern (Anna Chiarloni), Marie von Ebner-Eschenbachs Das Schadliche (Erika Tunner), der Figur des Juden in romantischen Marchen (Martha B. Helfer), der Reitergeschichte Hugo von Hofmannsthals (Heinz-Peter Preusser), der fruhen Romantikerinnenrezeption (Anke Gilleir), Franz Kafkas Das Urteil (Gerhard P. Thereby, these radical thoughts and acts could be classified as politcally left or right, progressive or reactionary. The volume wants to sharpen the term “Jewish Radicalism” and provide different perspectives on the historical phenomenon and its dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: progress and happiness - however these terms may be understood in detail - as a significant and constitutive element of scientific inquiry. In this sense the question of the way in which sport really benefits people and contributes to their happiness, and under which individual and social conditions, is a scientific question. It assumes special significance when the fact is taken into account that in the field of sport science a general scepticism is shown towards those dogmas and pedagogical theses which take such an interpretation for granted in the absence of a firm empirical foundation and a critically evolved theory. Sport and Sport Science Sport and exercise, physical culture and education in sport (physical training), gymnastics and touring combined with some form of sport are-as the present report distinctly shows-all over the world among the most striking social phenom ena of today. At first sight they seem to be uncomplicated, clear and comprehensible for everybody; they stand for a type of solidarity which is independent of differences in ideological-political outlook, and sometimes exhibit an almost archaic intensity and attraction; they are supported by the active participation or at least the interest of very many people in many parts of the world and are endued with specific func tions, varying in importance, of a medical (therapeutical, prophylactic, rehabilitative), pedagogical, psychological and social character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses the multi-faceted and far-reaching dealings between the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Third World countries, including their liberation movements and development policies. For almost 40 years, the history and previously intense relationship which was maintained between the GDR and Africa has been disregarded. This situation is arguably incomprehensible as Germany's image in many Third World countries has been defined greatly by the smaller of the two Germanies, especially in South Africa.
