Excerpt: ... necessary, either that the political objective points adopted in the course of a campaign, be in accordance with the principles of strategy, or, in the contrary case, that they be adjourned until after a decisive victory. By applying this maxim to the two events above cited, it will be acknowledged that it was at Cambrai, or in the heart of France, that it was necessary to conquer Dunkirk in 1793, and to deliver Holland in 1199; that is to say, by uniting the efforts of the coalition upon a decisive point of the frontiers, and by striking there a heavy blow. For the rest, expeditions of this nature enter almost always into the class of great diversions, to which we shall devote a special article. ARTICLE XX. FRONTS OF OPERATIONS, LINES OF DEFENSE, AND STRATEGICAL POSITIONS* There are certain points in the military science which have so much affinity to each other, that we are tempted to take them for one and the same thing, although they are substantially different. Of this number are fronts of operations, lines of defense, and strategical positions. One will be assured by the following observations, of the intimate relations, and of the difference which exist between them, and will appreciate the motives which have decided us to unite them in the same article. LINES OF DEFENSE. Lines of defense are of several natures; they are strategical and tac * This article ought strictly to be placed after that on lines of operations, especially in a methodical instruction; meanwhile, as in the latter, fronts of operations are frequently in question, 1 thought I might leave things as they are tical. In the first, there are those which are permanent, and relate to the system of defense of the State, as fortified frontier lines, &c.; others which...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antoine-Henri, baron Jomini (6 March 1779 - 24 March 1869) was a general in the French and later in the Russian service, and one of the most celebrated writers on the Napoleonic art of war. According to the historian John Shy, Jomini "deserves the dubious title of founder of modern strategy." Jomini's ideas were a staple at military academies. The senior generals of the American Civil War-those who had attended West Point-were well versed in Jomini's theories.
Download Free A Scientific Way of War PDF by Ian C. Hope Full Book and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While faith in the Enlightenment was waning elsewhere by 1850, at the United States Military Academy at West Point and in the minds of academy graduates serving throughout the country Enlightenment thinking persisted, asserting that war was governable by a grand theory accessible through the study of military science. Officers of the regular army and instructors at the military academy and their political superiors all believed strongly in the possibility of acquiring a perfect knowledge of war through the proper curriculum. A Scientific Way of War analyzes how the doctrine of military science evolved from teaching specific Napoleonic applications to embracing subjects that were useful for war in North America. Drawing from a wide array of materials, Ian C. Hope refutes earlier charges of a lack of professionalization in the antebellum American army and an overreliance on the teachings of Swiss military theorist Antoine de Jomini. Instead, Hope shows that inculcation in West Point’s American military curriculum eventually came to provide the army with an officer corps that shared a common doctrine and common skill in military problem solving. The proliferation of military science ensured that on the eve of the Civil War there existed a distinctly American, and scientific, way of war.
Download Free Masters of War PDF by Michael I. Handel Full Book and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study based on a detailed textual analysis of the classical works on war by Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, Mao Tse-tung, and to a lesser extent, Jomini and Machiavelli. Brushing stereotypes aside, the author takes a fresh look at what these strategic thinkers actually said—not what they are widely believed to have said. He finds that despite their apparent differences in terms of time, place, cultural background, and level of material/technological development, all had much more in common than previously supposed. In fact, the central conclusion of this book is that the logic of waging war and of strategic thinking is as universal and timeless as human nature itself. This third, revised and expanded edition includes five new chapters and some new charts and diagrams.
