Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less than a decade after the advent of democracy in South Africa, tabloid newspapers have taken the country by storm. One of these papers -- the Daily Sun -- is now the largest in the country, but it has generated controversy for its perceived lack of respect for privacy, brazen sexual content, and unrestrained truth-stretching. Herman Wasserman examines the success of tabloid journalism in South Africa at a time when global print media are in decline. He considers the social significance of the tabloids and how they play a role in integrating readers and their daily struggles with the political and social sphere of the new democracy. Wasserman shows how these papers have found an important niche in popular and civic culture largely ignored by the mainstream media and formal political channels.
Download Free Tabloid Journalism and Press Freedom in Africa PDF by Brian Chama Full Book and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies tabloid journalism newspapers within the broader context of press freedom in Africa. After defining tabloid journalism and professional practices within various political contexts, the book then proceeds to consider tabloids in Southern Africa and emerging cyberspace laws. Many factors of press freedom are considered, including the impact of public order and national security laws on tabloids in North Africa, the impact of defamation laws on tabloids in West Africa, the impact of the fake news laws on tabloids in East Africa, and the impact of sedition and treason laws on tabloids in Central Africa. Exploring tabloid journalism and press freedom in Arabic, Portuguese, and Francophone speaking countries across Africa, this book is a unique addition to this emerging field. The book concludes by providing a synthesis of the developing patterns from the cases analysed and by looking to the future to make recommendations and map the challenges and the successes.
Download Free Popular Media, Democracy and Development in Africa PDF by Herman Wasserman Full Book and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Media, Democracy and Development in Africa examines the role that popular media could play to encourage political debate, provide information for development, or critique the very definitions of ‘democracy’ and ‘development’. Drawing on diverse case studies from various regions of the African continent, essays employ a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to ask critical questions about the potential of popular media to contribute to democratic culture, provide sites of resistance, or, conversely, act as agents for the spread of Americanized entertainment culture to the detriment of local traditions. A wide variety of media formats and platforms are discussed, ranging from radio and television to the Internet, mobile phones, street posters, film and music. As part of the Routledge series Internationalizing Media Studies, the book responds to the important challenge of broadening perspectives on media studies by bringing together a range of expert analyses of media in the African continent that will be of interest to students and scholars of media in Africa and further afield.

This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigates the role of the tabloid newspaper, Daily Sun, in contemporary South Africa by exploring the meanings that readers of the newspaper appropriate through their engagement with it and the uses to which they put these meanings. Using qualitative data, collected through focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews conducted with township dwellers, workers and the unemployed with low English proficiency, reveals that the Daily Sun plays a positive role in the lives of its readers and that this role can best be understood through a combination of perspectives that incorporate the concept of multiple public spheres, culture as development and a revision of the traditional tabloid debate.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa offers a rich context for the study of the interrelationship between the media and identity. The essays collected in this book explore the many diverse elements of this interconnection and give fresh focus to topics that scholarship has tended to overlook, such as the pervasive impact of tabloid newspapers. Interrogating contemporary theory, the authors shed new light on how identities are constructed through the media and provide case studies that illustrate the complex process of identity renegotiation taking place currently in post-apartheid South Africa. The contributors include established scholars as well as many new voices. Collectively, they represent some of South Africa's finest media analysts pooling skills to grapple with one of the country's most vexing issues: who are we?
