Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Journalism Seriously provides a groundbreaking analysis of the adequacy of the standard of objectivity in journalism, using the journalistic principles of the Founding Fathers of America as the point of comparison. The author traces the present controversy back to the start of the consistent controversy that surrounds the press coverage of politics, when in 1969 Vice President Spiro Agnew charged the nation's television networks and newspapers with distorting political events and hampering the functioning of the government. He exposes the gradual shift of the press away from the objective reporting of facts into a partisan instrument for safeguarding the public's right to know. The line between editorial writing and reporting has virtually disappeared. Since objectivity provided its most dominant proof of integrity, the public trust of this institution has diminished. The author draws on major incidents that demonstrate this shift, including a prominent CBS documentary, the New York Times reporting on the Pentagon Papers, and the writers who influenced this evolution in journalism, while balancing this situation against the ideas of the Founding Fathers on journalism.

Book excerpt: The Anthropology of News and Journalism is the first book to explore the role of news and journalism in contemporary culture from an anthropological perspective -- as a form of cultural meaning-making in its creation, content, and dissemination. Anthropology's global, comparative perspective and ethnographic methods provide powerful insights for analyzing case studies from around the world. Essays by leading scholars explore communities of professional and nonprofessional journalists. They describe news-making processes ranging from the local to the global digital environment, as well as how news is disseminated and received in a variety of cultural settings. Contributors are S. Elizabeth Bird, Amahl Bishara, Dominic C. Boyer, Dorle DracklA(c), Zeynep Devrim GA1/4rsel, Jennifer Hasty, Joseph C. Manzella, Kerry McCallum, Mark Pedelty, Mark Allen Peterson, Ursula Rao, Adrienne Russell, Christina Schwenkel, Jonathan Skinner, Debra Spitulnik, Maria D. Vesperi, Karin Wahl-Jorgensen, and Leon I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, the horrific murders of Matthew Shepard -- a gay man living in Laramie, Wyoming -- and James Byrd Jr. -- an African American man dragged to his death in Jasper, Texas -- provoked a passionate public outrage. The intense media coverage of the murders made moments of violence based in racism and homophobia highly visible, which eventually led to the passage of The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2009. The role the media played in cultivating, shaping, and directing the collective emotional response toward these crimes is the subject of this gripping new book by Jennifer Petersen. Tracing the emotional exchange from news stories to the creation of law, Petersen calls for an approach to media and democratic politics that takes into account the role of affect in the political and legal life of the nation.
