Book excerpt: Get swept up in this enticing, emotional story of family suspense from New York Times bestselling author Diane Chamberlain. Her family’s cottage on the New Jersey shore was a place of freedom and innocence for Julie Bauer—until her seventeen-year-old sister, Isabel, was murdered. It’s been more than forty years since that August night, but Julie’s memories of her sister’s death still shape her world. Now someone from her past is raising questions about what really happened that night. About Julie’s own complicity. About a devastating secret her mother kept from them all. About the person who went to prison for Izzy’s murder—and the person who didn’t. Faced with questions and armed with few answers, Julie must gather the courage to revisit her past and untangle the complex emotions that led to one unspeakable act of violence on the bay at midnight. Book excerpt: The demand for oil to light and lubricate the industrial world changed the face of much of the planet. Newfoundland was part of this widespread transformation as migratory cod fishermen settled here in the early 1800s in order to hunt seals in late winter and early spring. The seal fishery brought prosperity and growth and shaped this new society, but seal hunters and their families paid a heavy human cost in lives lost and suffering experienced. The traditional oil industries were doomed with the discovery of mineral oils and the ha essing of electricity, and Newfoundland-along with other societies-faced painful adjustments while searching for alte ative industries. However while its place in the economy declined, the seal fishery left an indelible imprint on Newfoundland's culture and identity. This study, with its tables, maps and illustrations, examines the history of the Newfoundland seal fishery from its origins up to 1914, ranging in scope from the life of the hunter on the ice flows to the demands of the consumer in the market place. Shannon Ryan was bo in riverhead, Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, and educated at Memorial University of Newfoundland (BA Ed, BA, and MA) and the University of London (PH). He worked for nine years as a schoolteacher and principal and in 1971 he was appointed to the faculty of History. His publications and presentations are in the fields of Newfoundland, Maritime, fisheries and oral history. He served as president of the Newfoundland Historical society during 1984-1988, as Newfoundland's representative on the Social sciences and humanities research council of Canada during 1989-1993 and was elected a fellow of the Royal society in 1988.

Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs on Electromagnetic Waves: Ionospheric Sporadic E focuses on the methodologies, approaches, reactions, and calculations involved in the study of the ionospheric sporadic E. The selection first offers information on the occurrence of sporadic E and reflection mechanisms for sporadic E, as well as geographic occurrence and temporal variations of sporadic E and thin and scattering models. The text then examines the final remarks of the 1957 AGARD conference of sporadic-E ionization and study of radio wave scattering from sporadic E near the magnetic equator. The publication takes a look at sporadic E as observed with rockets and backscatter observations of sporadic E. Discussions focus on gradients, height preference, gradients in electron density, time variation, and interpretation and observation limitations. The text then ponders on lunar tidal variations of sporadic E and theoretical study of sporadic-E structure in the light of radio measurements. The selection is a vital reference for readers interested in the in the study of the ionospheric sporadic E.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fought in both Caribbean and Pacific and turning on America's superior naval strength, this short but decisive war had momentous consequences internationally. It ended Spain's imperial power, and the US emerged for the first time as an active force in world affairs, acquiring -- amidst much domestic controversy -- an empire of her own in the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba (whose struggle against Spain had sparked the war). Heavy with implications for twentieth-century America, the war is explored in its widest context in this engrossing and impressive study.
