Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canterville Ghost is a short story by Oscar Wilde. It was the first of Wilde's stories to be published, appearing in two parts 23 February and 2 March 1887. The story is about an American family who move to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife's brothers. The story begins when the American Minister Mr Otis and his family move into Canterville Chase, despite warnings from Lord Canterville that the house is haunted. Mr Otis says that he will take the furniture as well as the ghost at valuation. The Otis family includes Mr and Mrs Otis, their eldest son Washington, their daughter Virginia, and the Otis twins. The other characters include the Canterville Ghost, the Duke of Cheshire Mrs Umney and Rev Augustus Dampier. At first, none of the Otis family believe in ghosts, but shortly after they move in, none of them can deny the presence of Sir Simon de Canterville. The family hears clanking chains, they witness reappearing bloodstains on the floor just by the fireplace, which are removed every time they appear in various forms. But, humorously, none of these scare the Otis family in the least. In fact, upon hearing the clanking noises in the hallway, Mr Otis promptly gets out of bed and pragmatically offers the ghost Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator to oil his chains.

This book was released on 2005-12-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help readers improve reading skills while stimulating their appreciation and increasing their understanding of great literature. Using a scaffolding approach, this guide leads readers from simple and engaging reads to more challenging texts, and simultaneously cultivates their interest and skills. An invaluable resource for middle and high school, ABE and ESL educators, as well as for readers' advisors. All readers—even those still learning to speak English—can enjoy the delights and benefits of great literature with the help of this motivational and practical book guide. Rosow takes you on a journey through the history of Western literature, beginning with ancient myths and moving to medieval tales and classics of the Renaissance, Romantic Movement, and Modernism. Along the way, she shows you how to give readers easy access to some of the best literature of all time. Scores of collections focus on such ancient and enduring stories as Gilgamesh, Beowulf, the tales of Chaucer; historical masterpieces of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens; and stellar names of more recent times, such as Virginia Woolf, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, and J.R.R. Tolkien. Each carefully selected collection lists an assortment of titles, ranging in reading level and arranged progressively from simple renditions, such as picture book re-tellings, through more advanced selections and readings where audio versions and simpler formatting support the reader, and on to the most challenging reads. Author profiles and narrative, as well as detailed descriptions of each title provide further insights into the story lines and features of the books; while building a scaffold of reading experience and knowledge to help readers better understand the texts. For example, the Mark Twain collection begins with a brief biographical sketch of the author, followed by descriptions of two illustrated books about the author and two readers' theatre skits based on his work. A collection of Twain's short stories is recommended next, and then several illustrated versions of his novels, and an illustrated edition of Twain's memoir, Life on the Mississippi, which is supported by an audiotape version. Each recommended title is rated as start here, next read, support here, or challenging read; and related reads, and audio and video versions are listed when appropriate. The author also notes author and student favorites, titles with exceptional illustrations, and other features of interest. Focus is on authors and titles of the Western canon that are generally lu2768 le in library collections. Because some of the titles cited are older editions, this is a valuable collection development tool in libraries; as well as an essential resource for readers' advisors, Adult Basic Education, and English as Second Language educators, and young adult educators and librarians. Young adult and adult or Grades 9 and up.

This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its explosive publication in 1890, Oscar Wilde's Gothic treatise on decadence, sin, and corruption has been subject to scandal and intrigue. Revised and censored multiple times during Wilde's tragically short life, it is presented here in its original, un-muted form, complete with redacted phrases and sentences that would later be used against Wilde at his trials for homosexuality. Beyond its salacious subtext, however, is a rich and philosophical parable on morality -- one as powerful as a sermon but as sensually entrancing as an opium cigarette -- which slyly undermines its presumed thesis of hedonism with a heartbreaking appeal to human decency. Dorian Gray's transformation from innocent object of a shy painter's platonic lust to heartless, corrupting lady-killer with dozens of ruined lives, murders, and suicides on his conscience is etched into his soul without leaving a blemish on his lovely face. But as Wilde reveals throughout his hypnotic, Faustian novel, vanity, arrogance, and a lack of compassion may make for an indulgent life without regrets, but the devil will have his due. Annotated and illustrated, this critical edition of Wilde's deeply personal ode to corruption also includes his satricial ghost story, "The Canterville Ghost," the mysterious parable, "The Sphinx Without a Secret," and his black-comedy thriller, "Lord Arthur Saville's Crime."

Book excerpt: "The Canterville Ghost is a popular 1887 novella by Oscar Wilde, widely adapted for the screen and stage."The Canterville Ghost" is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and the United States minister (ambassador) to the Court of St. James's, Hiram B. Otis. Mr. Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted country house. Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the house, warns Mr. Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted it ever since he killed his wife, Eleonore, three centuries before. But Mr. Otis dismisses the ghost story as bunk and disregards Lord Canterville's warnings. When the Otises learn that the house is indeed haunted, they succeed in victimizing the ghost and in disregarding age-old British traditions. What emerges is a satire of American materialism, a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale."

However, the chosen one is the one who sees only one thing in beauty: the Beauty itself ” said one of the most famous English poets, writers, playwrights, a bright and inimitable Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Oscar Wilde is the author of not only the world famous novel “Portrait of Dorian Gray”, but also of beautiful fairy tales combining the rich imagination of the writer and the ironic style of narration. They sing the beauty of good deeds, sympathy for the offended and humanity. Wilde is also famous for such works as “Puffy Rocket”, “Infanta’s Birthday”, “Nightingale and the Rose”, “Princess’s Birthday”, “Faithful Friend”, “The Prince and the Swallow”, “The Egoist Giant”. “The Canterville Ghost” is about a family who moves to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife’s brothers. The home of the Canterville Ghost was the ancient Canterville Chase, which has all the accoutrements of a traditional haunted house. Descriptions of the wainscoting, the library panelled in black oak, and the armour in the hallway characterise the setting. Wilde mixes the macabre with comedy, juxtaposing devices from traditional English ghost stories such as creaking floorboards, clanking chains, and ancient prophecies. Illustrated by Nataly Ger.

Artwork that bring to life certain episodes in the story Suggestions for further reading and website links that the reader will find informative and helpful The Canterville Ghost was Oscar Wilde's first published story, and it premiered in the magazine The Court and Society Review (February, 1887). Later, it was published in a collection of short stories titled Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories (1891). Set in late the 19th century, it tells about an American family's encounter with the ghost of an English nobleman. The setting is an old English country house, Canterville Chase. It has all the trappings of a traditional haunted house, but the family that comes to live there belongs to a practical, modern way of life. This sets the stage for the novella. A contrast is shown between traditional English society, which has its roots in a nearly two thousand-year-old history and modern, practical American society, which belongs a nation discovered only in the 17th century. The seller of Canterville Chase, Lord Canterville, and the buyer, Mr Otis, represent these two cultures, respectively. The ghost of Sir Simon, a family ancestor, tries his best to scare the Otis family with the most gruesome appearances. However, the realistic American family refuses to get scared, and Sir Simon ends up only with comic failures. The Canterville Ghost is the kind of story one would write if one wanted to make fun of hair-raising ghost stories. Yet, there are moments of pure sentiment that do not seem misplaced in the narrative. Wilde's mastery over sentiment and comedy alike makes this book a perennial favourite. Not surprisingly, the novella has been widely adapted for the screen, theatre, and graphic medium.
