'The Canterville Ghost' was his first published story, and is now one of his most popular, having been adapted many times. Many of the earliest ghost stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book excerpt: Originally published in two parts in “The Court and Society Review” (March, 1887), "The Canterville Ghost" is a comical short story written by Oscar Wilde. His first published story, it revolves around an American family who move into an English Castle. However, before long they realise that they share their new home with the ghost of a murderous English aristocrat. An incredible humorous play brimming with Wilde's trademark wit not to be missed by fans of his seminal work. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish poet and playwright who became one of the most popular in London during the 1880s and 1890s. Well-known for his sharp wit and extravagant attire, Wilde was a proponent of aestheticism and wrote in a variety of forms including poetry, fiction, and drama. He was famously imprisoned for homosexual acts from 1895 to 1897 and died at the age of 46, just three years after his release. Other notable works by this author include: “Picture of Dorian Gray” (1890), “Salome” (1891), and “The Importance of Being Earnest” (1895). Fantasy and Horror Classics is proudly republishing this classic play now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: "The Canterville Ghost is a popular 1887 novella by Oscar Wilde, widely adapted for the screen and stage."The Canterville Ghost" is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and the United States minister (ambassador) to the Court of St. James's, Hiram B. Otis. Mr. Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted country house. Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the house, warns Mr. Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted it ever since he killed his wife, Eleonore, three centuries before. But Mr. Otis dismisses the ghost story as bunk and disregards Lord Canterville's warnings. When the Otises learn that the house is indeed haunted, they succeed in victimizing the ghost and in disregarding age-old British traditions. What emerges is a satire of American materialism, a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale."

Book excerpt: During the Silent Era, when most films dealt with dramatic or comedic takes on the “boy meets girl, boy loses girl” theme, other motion pictures dared to tackle such topics as rejuvenation, revivication, mesmerism, the supernatural and the grotesque. A Daughter of the Gods (1916), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Magician (1926) and Seven Footprints to Satan (1929) were among the unusual and startling films containing story elements that went far beyond the realm of “highly unlikely.” Using surviving documentation and their combined expertise, the authors catalog and discuss these departures from the norm in this encyclopedic guide to American horror, science fiction and fantasy in the years from 1913 through 1929.

Book excerpt: The Classic British Telefantasy Guide is derived from the second edition of The Guinness Book of Classic British TV with various corrections and a revised introduction to bring it up to date. It was written when the Internet barely existed, and at a time when few books had been published on the subject. This is, however, by no means a new or completely revised version of the original material - too much time has passed, and if we were to start reworking and correcting the text now, it would probably never be finished! Instead, Classic British Telefantasy is an electronic reprint of some of the authors' earliest work, repacked for a new format and, perhaps, a new age.
