Download Free Adventures in the Connaught Rangers PDF by Lt.-Colonel William Grattan Full Book and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a well-known and respected family in Dublin, William Grattan has left no sketch of himself or his reasons for joining the 88th Regiment of Foot, the most Irish of all the Irish regiments according to Oman, as a subaltern in 1809. It is conceivable that he thirsted for adventure, and advancement, however little did he know that he would be joining as hard fighting, drinking and pilfering regiment that ever fought in the Peninsular under Wellington. Christened “The Devil’s Own” by their divisional commander Picton, the Connaught Rangers as they were also known are detailed in all their varied adventures by Grattan. The “Adventures” are particularly well written by an author who had two sterling attributes as a writer above and beyond his contemporaries, the first an un-erring ability to describe the actions, skirmishes and battles that he was involved in despite smoke, carnage and confusion around him at the time. The second is an ability to provide a plethora of details and anecdotes that breathe life into normal day-to-day events in the army and more specifically his famous regiment. Wellington was to famously to congratulate them along with four companies of the 45th Regiment of their charge at Busaco; “Upon my honour, I never witnessed a more gallant charge than that just now made by your regiment.” Grattan would eventually leave the service in 1817, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, but his association with the regiment that he dearly loved would continue on his continued writings in defence of Sir Thomas Picton, his divisional chief and his regiment in the pages of the United Service Magazine and monographs of his own. Warmly recommended. This is the second volume of the original two volume account left by Lieutenant-Colonel Grattan, rather than the heavily edited version commonly found.

Download Free The Complete Adventures in the Connaught Rangers PDF by William Grattan Full Book and published by . This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A famous account-two volumes complete in one book Grattan's account of his service with the famous 88th-The Connaught Rangers-the hardest fighting and possibly least appreciated regiment in Wellington's famous Peninsula Army fighting Napoleon's French, is well known and highly regarded by scholars and students of the Napoleonic Wars alike. For those who may be unfamiliar with it, this is a memoir full of incident and action, well written and charmingly enhanced by the many characterisations of and anecdotes about the irrepressible Irish soldiery who made up its ranks. This edition, at some 560 pages, should not be confused with edited versions in print; it is quite different. Grattan's account originally ran to two volumes and later editors have seen fit to considerably cut the text; had that editing only removed uninteresting, irrelevant or unentertaining material there would have been no purpose in this 'restored' edition. The Leonaur editors are pleased to offer the entire 'Adventures in the Connaught Rangers' unedited-both vital volumes in one edition for your enjoyment. Available in soft cover and hard back with dust jacket for collectors.
Download Free Irish Regiments in the Great War PDF by Timothy Bowman Full Book and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. While attention has hitherto focused on the 312 notorious "shot at dawn" cases, many thousands of British soldiers were tried by court martial during the Great War. This book will be essential reading for military and Irish historians and their students, and will interest any general reader concerned with how units maintain discipline and morale under the most trying conditions.
