Book excerpt: It all starts with a dare. Salome, a spirited young woman in Galilee, is perched in a tree and challenges Nathaniel, her smitten childhood friend, to climb onto a high branch after her. He falls and crushes a leg. Salome flees the scene in shock, abandoning Nathaniel. When Salome discovers her younger sister, Mariam (the Virgin Mary), is pregnant out of wedlock after their older sister, Rebekah, has been raped by Roman soldiers, she tries to raise the family’s reputation by marrying a man she barely knows, forsaking Nathaniel and nurturing guilt. At the same time, Nathaniel battles his own seemingly unrequited feelings for Salome and also marries another. Both Nathaniel and Salome wrestle with inner turmoil and become undercover messengers and freedom fighters for the Zealots in a fledgling rebellion. Their paths continue to cross over the years, and a tangled relationship simmers and evolves. This coming-of-age story is set in biblical times amid the brutal rule of Roman centurions yet has universal and modern-day relevance. Salome’s shame, fear, regret, love, integrity, and perseverance will resonate with anyone dealing with the desire to be “good.” The Good Sister is the first in a trilogy that follows Salome as she navigates the murky waters of human motivations and aspirations—only to discover that real love is not necessarily tied to goodness.

Book excerpt: Roxanne Callahan has always been her younger sister's caretaker. Now married, her happiness is threatened when beautiful and emotionally unstable Simone, suffering from crippling postpartum depression, commits an unforgivable crime for which Roxanne comes to believe she is partially responsible. In the glare of national media attention brought on her sister, Roxanne fights to hold her marriage together as she is drawn back into the pain of her troubled past and relives the fraught relationship she and Simone shared with their narcissistic mother. At the same time, only she can help Simone's nine year old daughter, Merell, make sense of the family's tragedy. Cathartic, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest, The Good Sister is a novel of four generations of women struggling to overcome a legacy of violence, lies and secrecy, ultimately finding strength and courage in their love for each other.

Book excerpt: An electrifying novel about the unyielding bond between two sisters, which is severely tested when one of them is accused of the worst imaginable crime. Martha and Becky Blackwater are more than sisters--they're each other's lifelines. When Martha finds herself struggling to balance early motherhood and her growing business, Becky steps in to babysit her niece, Layla, without a second thought, bringing the two women closer than ever. But then the unthinkable happens, and Becky is charged with murder. Nine months later, Becky is on trial and maintains her innocence--and so does Martha. Unable to shake the feeling that her sister couldn't possibly be guilty, Martha sets out to uncover exactly what happened that night, and how things could have gone so wrong. As the trial progresses, fault lines between the sisters begin to show--revealing cracks deep in their relationship and threatening the family each has worked so hard to build. With incredible empathy and resounding emotional heft, The Good Sister is a powerhouse of a novel that will lead readers to question everything they know about motherhood, family, and the price of forgiveness.

Book excerpt: Jennifer and Catherine-sisters who have inherited equal shares of power in Pegasus Satellite Services, one of the biggest communications empires in the world-could not be more different. While Catherine is an extraordinary beauty whose looks attract the most handsome and powerful men, her sister is a plain-Jane, no-nonsense gal who prefers running the company to walking the red carpet. But Jennifer's aversion to the spotlight becomes secondary after the successful launch of the Pegasus III satellite, her newest technological masterpiece. The company needs someone to explain the revolutionary communications tool to potential clients and Jennifer is forced to make the awkward transition from playing scientist in the laboratory to playing hostess at the most lavish party in Cannes. That's where she meets Padraig, a major film star with enough Irish charm and celebrity cache to make the move to power producer. But when he marries Jennifer, Catherine's protective instincts are triggered: is the playboy actor only after Jennifer's money and connections? When Jennifer is almost killed in a car accident on her honeymoon, Catherine feels she must intervene in her sister's relationship. But Jennifer begins to suspect that Catherine is jealous of the wallflower sister's new romance, and possibly of her power within the company. Was the accident Catherine's murderous attempt to win complete control of Pegasus? Suddenly, neither sister can trust the other in a game that has their love, fortune, and even their lives hanging in the balance. What begins as a rivalry between sisters becomes a chilling novel of psychological suspense in which one sister find herself alone on a yacht at sea, forced to defend herself from a terrifying killer in league with her sister. But which sister?

Warm thoughts like, "You've loved me when I've been full of joy, full of myself, or full of crap," meld with popular Co-edikit witticisms such as, "When boys think, their brains explode" and "Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?"

Book excerpt: A reader’s guide to the morphology and syntax of Koine Greek From the pen of a seasoned instructor of biblical Greek, this book functions as both an essential resource for second-year students and an invaluable asset for all readers as they continue to hone and deepen their linguistic skills. It begins with a basic overview of the language for new learners and for those looking for a brief refresher before moving into nuanced matters of morphology and syntax. Whitacre’s aim is ultimately to help readers understand the subtleties of the language on the pages of the New Testament; thus, he engages with the biblical text both grammatically and exegetically, so that readers can experience its full power and beauty. Including numerous illustrative examples throughout and several useful appendices at the end, A Grammar of New Testament Greek is indispensable both as a textbook and as a reference for all readers of the Greek New Testament—and other texts written in Koine, such as the Septuagint and the Apostolic Fathers.

Book excerpt: The stories contained in this book were told to children in Albania many years ago. Some may appear harsh, confusing, or antiquated to contemporary readers, but they are best understood as stories written for us and not to us. Albania is an ancient and rich culture with centuries of tradition, so please read these stories with that in mind. In Plain Jane 3, I will share childhood stories that I heard growing up. Although my grandparents and great-grandparents were uneducated people, they were very smart, though quite old-fashioned. They taught me the value of hard work and how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last third of the 19th century witnessed a considerable increase in the active participation of women in the various Christian missions. Katharina Stornig focusses onthe Catholic case, and particularly explores the activities and experiences of German missionary nuns, the so-called Servants of the Holy Spirit,in colonial Togo and New Guinea in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Introducing the nuns' ambiguous roles as travelers, evangelists, believers, domestic workers, farmers, teachers, and nurses, Stornig highlights the ways in which these women shaped and were shaped by the missionary encounter and how they affected colonial societies more generally. Privileging the sources produced by nuns (i.e. letters, chronicles and reports) and emphasizing their activities, Sisters Crossing Boundaries profoundly challenges the frequent depiction of women and particularly nuns as the largely passive observers of the missionizing and colonizing activities of men. Stornig does not stop at adding women to the existing historical narrative of mission in Togo and New Guinea, but presents the hopes and strategies that German nuns related to the imagination and practice of empire. She also discusses the effects of boundary-crossing, both real and imagined, in the context of religion, gender and race.
