Book excerpt: Once upon a time, there was a foolish Fairy King who let pride and spite guide his thinking. As punishment for his impudence and betrayal, his clan condemned him to human form and charged him with the task of earning the trust of a single mortal. Given less than a year to achieve his goal, poor Frisque finds himself banished to the present-day world to seek his deliverance. From the age of early myth to our modern era, Fairies have inhabited a magical niche in the human imagination. Through "The Fairys Tale", the journey and musings of little Frisque provide a keen insight into the true purpose of these magical imps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays in aesthetics by the philosopher Ernst Bloch that belong to the tradition of cultural criticism represented by Georg Lukács, Theodor Adorno, and Walter Benjamin. The aesthetic essays of the philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885–1977) belong to the rich tradition of cultural criticism represented by Georg Lukács, Theodor Adorno, and Walter Benjamin. Bloch was a significant creative source for these thinkers, and his impact is nowhere more evident than in writings on art. Bloch was fascinated with art as a reflection of both social realities and human dreams. Whether he is discussing architecture or detective novels, the theme that drives his work is always the same—the striving for "something better," for a "homeland" that is more socially aware, more humane, more just. The book opens with an illuminating discussion between Bloch and Adorno on the meaning of utopia; then follow twelve essays written between 1930 and 1973 on topics such as aesthetic theory, genres such as music, painting, theater, film, opera, poetry, and the novel, and perhaps most important, popular culture in the form of fairy tales, detective stories, and dime novels. The MIT Press has previously published Ernst Bloch's Natural Law and Human Dignity and his magnum opus, The Principle of Hope. The Utopian Function of Art and Literature is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy.

Download Free More Celtic Fairy Tales - Illustrated by John D. Batten PDF by Joseph Jacobs Full Book and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Celtic Fairy Tales is part of a series written by the Australian born folklorist Joseph Jacobs. In this book feature over two dozen stories taken from popular oral tradition and united with John D. Batten's black and white drawings, full of movement and energy. Stories include: 'The Fate of the Children of Lir', 'Jack the Cunning Thief', 'Morraha', 'The Farmer of Liddesdale', 'The Legend of Knockgrafton', 'How Cormac Mac Art went to Faery' and many others. Heavily influenced by the Brothers Grimm and the romantic nationalism ubiquitous in his contemporary folklorists, Jacobs was responsible for introducing English fairy tales to English children, who had previously chiefly enjoyed those derived from French and German folklore. Beautifully illustrated by John D. Batten, these timeless fairy tales make for ideal bedtime reading and are not to be missed by collectors. John Dickson Batten (1860-1932) was a British painter, illustrator and print maker who was a leading light in the Art Nouveau movement. He illustrated a number of fairy tale books written by Joseph Jacobs including, English Fairy Tales (1890), Indian Fairy Tales (1912), and European Folk and Fairy Tales (1916). Presented alongside the text of Celtic Fairy Tales, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Joseph Jacob’s enchanting narratives. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Download Free The Classic Fairytales PDF by Charles Way Full Book and published by Aurora Metro Publications Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three timeless tales retold for the stage by one of the UK’s most renowned writers of plays for children, Charles Way. Winner of the Writers Guild Best Children’s Play Award, his plays appeal to audiences of all ages and are translated into several languages and performed internationally. Each of the three plays explores the journey from childhood to adulthood, but each takes a specific angle. Sleeping Beauty is driven by the notion of duality. Everyone and everything in the play has a complimentary aspect; King and Queen, Castle and forest, bright witch and dark witch, etc. Gryff, half-dragon, half-human is the physical embodiment of the idea of duality and is at war with himself. This is both dramatic, since it provides the conflict needed for the drama, and thematically rich, since it explores what all of us, but more precisely children, feel as they grow up. Cinderella is a play about a journey from darkness to light, from sickness to health. Everyone in the play is under the influence of some kind of loss, and the play explores these feelings and the sometimes painful route one must take to accommodate them and move on in life. It’s a moving and beautiful play, that also manages to be tremendously funny and the introduction of Mozart as a character, whose music charts the whole journey toward light and joy, is a theatrical coup. Where Cinderella has music at its core, Beauty and the Beast has dance. This is a play about overcoming fear, and the subconscious world is represented through imagery and movement. The play begins with a startling dream sequence and then segues into the drawing-room world of a Jane Austen novel, before moving to the wilds of Dartmoor. Throughout this journey one is never sure if the play is in dreamtime or not, and Way connects this feeling to the very act of theatre itself. As ever, the themes are explored through dramatic action, and the result in Beauty and the Beast is a script of rare brevity that allows actors and directors room to explore the profound nature of the story.

Hewe we have a story about a boy named Wendell, who lives in Boston and likes fairy stories and baseball MUCH more than he likes fractions – but he does like reading and can be found in the children’s section of the library on most days. He even checked fairytale books out of the library and took them home with him. At night his parents had to take the books away from him as he was quite often found in the early hours of the morning reading a book under his covers with a torch. Then Wendell reads about the Wishing Stone. On making enquiries he finds it is no longer where his book said it would be and he starts to make enquiries as to its current whereabouts – and so starts Wendell’s adventure across Boston and into the land of Fairydom. This volume is sure to keep you and your young ones enchanted for hours, if not because of the quantity, then their quality. They will have you coming back for more time and again. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy kingdom, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, laughter, Wishing Stone, Pixie Starts It, First Task, Wendell, Unexpected, Ally, Frog, Out Of The Common, extraordinary, Enchanted Maiden, Midnight Spell, Cousin Virginia, Caller, Break, Charm, spell, Giant, House, Cloak Of Darkness, invisibility, Blind Man’s Buff, bluff, Cap Of Thought, Magic Book, Choice, Happy Family, Sammy, Tries His Hand, Acorn, Beacon, Beauteous, Beautiful, Boston, Cap, Cousin, electric, freckle-faced, Kobold, library, magic, Maiden, Mummer, Park, Pixie, riddle, Sammy, school, shape, squirrel, stepmother, Stepsister, telephone, Virginia, Wendell, young
