Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 32: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science; January-June, 1848 If we mark Individual filaments, or groups, or knots, we shall find that they change their shapes, one part Ofa filament doubling itself over another, and again resuming its elongated form. The minute spherical bodies separate and approach one another; but I have not been able to satisfy myself that those within the tubular filaments change their place. They Often appear to do so; but as this necessarily arises from the bending of the filament, and from the var ing obliquity of different parts of it owing to its change of orm or place, we are not entitled, from this apparent motion, to consider them as moveable within the tube. It is certain, however, that they have no progressive motion, as supposed by Mr. Mackenzie. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On the Action of Yellow Light in producing the Green Colour, and Jndigo Light the Movements., of Plants. By D. P. Gardner, M.D., Corresponding Member of the Lyceum of Natural History, New York. 1. The object of this paper is to prove the existence of different properties in the rays of the spectrum, in their action on vegetables; and more especially to show that the rays which produce the green colour of plants are altogether dissimilar from those which influence their movements towards light; the colour being developed by the less re-frangible rays, and chiefly by the yellow; whereas the motion is influenced by indigo light. The discussion of the subject will be divided under three heads: - 1st. On the Production of Chlorophyl by yellow light. 2nd. On the Movements of Plants towards indigo light. 3rd. Some applications of these facts to vegetable physiology. Part I. On the Production of Chlorophyl by yellow light. 2. It is a fundamental fact in botany that light is necessary to the formation of chlorophyl. Von Humboldt adduced certain exceptions to this law, in the case of plants found in the mines of Freyberg, and with Senebier ascribed the green matter to the action of hydrogen gas. But the experiments of the latter have failed in the hands of DeCandolle, and a series instituted by myself, and conducted with great care, were equally unsuccessful. On the other hand, Humboldt succeeded in greening a plant of Lepidium sativum, raised in darkness, by the light of two lamps, and DeCandolle obtained the same result with six Argand lamps. 3. The investigation has been subsequently confined to the name of the ray which produces the chlorophyl. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 36: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science; January June, 1850 Attention has of late been directed to the extraction of silver by the wet way from many of its ores, of which large quantities are now imported into this country, especially from South America. Several processes have been projected; and one, the subject of a patent, is now extensively practised. It consists in calcining the ore with chloride of sodium, precisely as in the amalgamation process of Freiberg, and then dissolving out the chloride of silver formed during the calcination by a hot saturated solution of chloride of sodium. From this solution the silver is precipitated by metallic copper, and then cupelled. I have examined many South American silver ores, and have found them very variable in respect to the proportion of silver, and the presence of gold and other metals. In one ore I have found as much as 301/4 per cent, of fine silver. Several smelling establishments have, I know, attempted to work some of these ores in the dry way, but the results have not been favourable. Hence will appear the importance of directing attention to the conomic extraction of the silver by the wet way. The ore which I subjected to experiment was an auriferous silver ore, which contained a large proportion of blende, with galena, iron pyrites and copper pyrites in small quantity; the non-metallic part of it consisted chiefly of silica. The silver was present as sulphuret. By roasting, the ore swelled up much, and sulphurous acid was copiously disengaged. I received it in the stale of coarse brownish-gray powder. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, Vol. 25: Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, July-December, 1844 Chlorine gas, which has been exposed to the daylight or to sunshine, possesses qualities which are not possessed by chlorine which has been made in the dark. This is shown by the circumstance, that chlorine which has been exposed to the sunshine has obtained from that exposure the property of speedily uniting with hydrogen gas; a property not possessed by chlorine which has been made and kept in the dark. This quality gained by the chlorine arises from its having absorbed tithonic rays corresponding in refrangibility to the indigo. It is not a transient, but apparently a permanent property, the rays so absorbed becoming latent, and the effect lasting for an unknown period of time. The facts which I shall proceed to describe will be interesting to chemists, because they plainly lead us to suspect that the descriptions we have of the properties of all elementary and compound bodies are either inaccurate or confused. These properties are such as bodies exhibit after they have been exposed to the light; we still require to know what are the properties they possess before exposure to such influences. Natural philosophers will also find an interest in these phenomena, for they finally establish for the tithonic rays two important facts, - 1st, that those rays are absorbed by ponderable bodies; and 2nd, that they become latent after the manner of heat. Thus every operation denoted by (de introduces two constants; and in many cases all the constants thus introduced except two, which are arbitrary, must be determined in terms of these two arbitrary constants by reference to the original differential equation. This difficulty does not occur in the above equation which may be written in the simpler form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
