Book excerpt: Lady Jane Grey has often been called the 'Tudor Pawn' but to see her as one whose life was simply moved around by others is totally inadequate. This is no simplistic life and death of a sixteen-year-old girl. In order to understand the full tragedy and triumph of her life it is vital to grasp the far-reaching political and religious changes that were shaking England at that time. The Reformation touched the whole population; from palace to university; from emerging town to peasant cottage. Like the pieces of a jigsaw, the pieces come together to give a picture of a girl with outstanding natural abilities, whose strength of character and remarkable faith shine out despite the darkness that often surrounded her. Execution at age 16, Jane paid an awful price for a throne she did not seek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Grey’s tragedy was her royal blood. As Henry VIII’s great-niece she stood perilously close to the throne and from early childhood was used as a pawn in the deadly power game of Tudor politics. Jane was not happy at home – she once famously remarked that she thought herself in hell in her parents’ company – and sought consolation in her studies and the uncompromising Protestantism fashionable in the l550s. When it became clear that her cousin Edward VI was dying she was forced into marriage with a son of the powerful John Dudley Duke of Northumberland and confronted with the news that the king had made her his heir. So began her reign as the Nine Days Queen, leading to her imprisonment in the Tower and execution at the age of sixteen. Alison Plowden reveals with insight and skill the complex intensity of the woman behind the myth, the brilliantly gifted child who was developing into a passionate, forceful young woman.

This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Jane Grey (1536/1537 - 12 February 1554), also known as Lady Jane Dudley or the Nine Day Queen, was an English noblewoman and de facto monarch of England from 10 July until 19 July 1553. The great-granddaughter of Henry VII through his younger daughter Mary, Jane was a first cousin once removed of Edward VI. In May 1553, she was married to Lord Guildford Dudley, a younger son of Edward's chief minister, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. When the 15-year-old king lay dying in June 1553, he nominated Jane as successor to the Crown in his will, thus subverting the claims of his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth under the Third Succession Act. Jane was imprisoned in the Tower of London when the Privy Council decided to change sides and proclaim Mary as queen on 19 July 1553. Jane was convicted of high treason in November 1553, which carried a sentence of death, although her life was initially spared. Wyatt's rebellion of January and February 1554 against Queen Mary I's plans to marry Philip of Spain led to the execution of both Jane and her husband. Lady Jane Grey had an excellent humanist education and a reputation as one of the most learned young women of her day. A committed Protestant, she was posthumously regarded as not only a political victim but also a martyr.
Download Free History of Lady Jane Grey PDF by Arthur MacArthur Full Book and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Lady Jane Grey illustrates the complex and bloody history of the English monarchy. Through a very long, strange chain of wills, deaths and requests, Jane was named heiress to the English throne of July 1553. She was known as a kind and devout Protestant and was chosen to receive the honor over Edward Tudor's sister, Mary who was Catholic. The attempt to put Jane in power failed; after nine days she was imprisoned in the Tower of London and then executed. Mary Tudor had gotten enough popular support to have Jane deposed. Jane's own immediate family did not impart much kindness either. In a 1550 letter to Roger Ascham, Jane wrote, "I will tell you a truth which perchance ye will marvel at. One of the greatest benefits that God ever gave me is that he sent me so sharp and severe parents and so gentle a schoolmaster. For when I am in the presence of Father or Mother, whether I speak, keep silence, sit, stand or go, eat, drink, be merry or sad, be sewing, playing, dancing, or doing anything else, I must do it as it were in such weight, measure and number, even so perfectly as God made the world; or else I am so sharply taunted, so cruelly threatened, yea presently sometimes with pinches, nips and bobs and other ways (which I will not name for the honour I bear them), so without measure misordered, that I think myself in hell, till time comes that I must go to Mr Aylmer, who teacheth me so gently, so pleasantly, with such fair allurements to learning, that I think all the time nothing while I am with him." This new edition is dedicated to Emma Norman, who knows well and cherishes English history.
Download Free Lady Jane Grey PDF by Eric Ives Full Book and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Jane Grey, is one of the most elusive and tragic characters in English history. In July 1553 the death of the childless Edward VI threw the Tudor dynasty into crisis. On Edward's instructions his cousin Jane Grey was proclaimed queen, only to be ousted 13 days later by his illegitimate half sister Mary and later beheaded. In this radical reassessment, Eric Ives rejects traditional portraits of Jane both as hapless victim of political intrigue or Protestant martyr. Instead he presents her as an accomplished young woman with a fierce personal integrity. The result is a compelling dissection by a master historian and storyteller of one of history’s most shocking injustices.

Download Free The Grey Sisters PDF by Lucy Wiltshire Full Book and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Jane Grey is famously known for being the queen that reigned for just nine days, before being ousted by Mary Tudor and beheaded for treason. As Mary Tudor has been portrayed as a villainous, heartless queen - "Bloody Mary", in contrast Lady Jane Grey has therefore been made out to be perfection personified - the sweetest and most innocent girl, cruelly sacrificed as a result of the malevolent ambitions of her detestable parents and father-in-law. Of course, there is little truth in this highly exaggerated picture of bad Catholic queen versus virtuous Protestant queen. Lady Jane Grey was the eldest sister of three, and her younger sisters, Katherine and Mary who both suffered similar tragic lives, have similarly been cast as helpless ill-fated heroines. The Grey sisters however were far more interesting than that though. They had been placed in line to the succession by the wills of Henry VIII and Edward VI, (and also by parliamentary statute). Being in line to the throne, was a precarious position indeed, and often those that found themselves named as heirs became the targets of plots and conspiracies. The Grey sisters however threw caution to the wind, and did little to safe guard their vulnerable positions at court, flouting the laws and following their ambitions and desires. They would be a constant thorn in the side of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, who would prove to be women you really don't want to upset. This book will look at the stories of the pious Protestant Jane Grey, who treacherously sought the crown; her love-struck younger sister Katherine who married in secret and the youngest sister Mary who was a dwarf who secretly married a giant - much like a fairy tale, but without a happy ending.
Download Free The Sisters Who Would Be Queen PDF by Leanda de Lisle Full Book and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Leanda de Lisle brings the story of nine days’ queen Lady Jane Grey and her forgotten sisters, the rivals of Elizabeth I, to vivid life in her fascinating biography.”—Philippa Gregory Mary, Katherine, and Jane Grey–sisters whose mere existence nearly toppled a kingdom and altered a nation’s destiny–are the captivating subjects of Leanda de Lisle’s new book. The Sisters Who Would Be Queen breathes fresh life into these three young women, who were victimized in the notoriously vicious Tudor power struggle and whose heirs would otherwise probably be ruling England today. Born into aristocracy, the Grey sisters were the great-granddaughters of Henry VII, grandnieces to Henry VIII, legitimate successors to the English throne, and rivals to Henry VIII’s daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. Lady Jane, the eldest, was thrust center stage by greedy men and uncompromising religious politics when she briefly succeeded Henry’s son, the young Edward I. Dubbed “the Nine Days Queen” after her short, tragic reign from the Tower of London, Jane has over the centuries earned a special place in the affections of the English people as a “queen with a public heart.” But as de Lisle reveals, Jane was actually more rebel than victim, more leader than pawn, and Mary and Katherine Grey found that they would have to tread carefully in order to avoid sharing their elder sister’s violent fate. Navigating the politics of the Tudor court after Jane’ s death was a precarious challenge. Katherine Grey, who sought to live a stable life, earned the trust of Mary I, only to risk her future with a love marriage that threatened Queen Elizabeth’s throne. Mary Grey, considered too petite and plain to be significant, looked for her own escape from the burden of her royal blood–an impossible task after she followed her heart and also incurred the queen’s envy, fear, and wrath. Exploding the many myths of Lady Jane Grey’s life, unearthing the details of Katherine’s and Mary’s dramatic stories, and casting new light on Elizabeth’s reign, Leanda de Lisle gives voice and resonance to the lives of the Greys and offers perspective on their place in history and on a time when a royal marriage could gain a woman a kingdom or cost her everything.
