Book excerpt: Between the stock market crash, a rich man’s greed and the Navarro County drought an indentured slave is left with few [if any] choices. Jamison Baines Weir is born the son of a sharecropper where hard times and sorrow are a way of life. It is a way of life Jamie never questions until famine and malice force him to leave the dying farm and follow a path that leads to murder and mystery. All eyes were on Wall Street, but truth be told, the market crash paled in comparison to the Navarro County drought. A Form of Free Slavery? Sharecroppers were provided land for farming, shelter for their family, equipment and credit for living expenses until the harvest. The sharecropper provided labor - his only resource. After the harvest they settled up, the landowner received three-fourths of the profit and the sharecropper one fourth. Of course the sharecropper's share went toward paying his credit bill and often he was left owing so he had little choice but to stay on the farm, do it again and try to produce more so he could get out of debt, but debt was always waiting at the end of the row. The Great Depression

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1917, there is no escape from the tight grasp of the Mississippi delta, especially for a black young man. As James Hayes grows up tilling the soil with his disabled father and younger brother, all he can think about is how badly he wants out. Lured by stories of the Great Migration north, he dreams of the day when he will be able to leave and make his mark on the world. Finally on one October morning, eighteen-year-old James gets his chance. When he is drafted and sent to France at the height of the Argonne Offensive by Germany, James becomes embroiled in the thick of battle, eventually standing out from other soldiers by winning the French Croix de Guerre. As the conflict ends in 1918, he ventures to Paris where he is invited to sing at a local bistro. Soon, he becomes a sensation, settles in his adopted country, and marries a local woman. But when he is called home to be near his terminally ill father, fate rises up to meet him and changes everything once again. In this tale of hope and perseverance, a black World War I draftee from the Mississippi delta journeys from the trenches of the Western Front to 1920s Paris and back home again.

Book excerpt: "Doc Granger's biography is a fascinating series of stories that chronicle a life well-lived. Doc is the kind of strong, savvy, spiritual man who has helped make the American Dream a reality." - Susan D. Brandenburg, Author of Sharecropper's Son The Story of Doc Garland Granger "Doc's competitive nature inspires me. He is someone with great vision, and he gambles to get what he wants he'll go right to the edge! He's not afraid of anything, and he loves to build something from nothing. He builds people as well or better than he builds businesses. He saw more in me than I saw in myself. Without him, I wouldn't be where I am today." - Nadine Gramling "Doc just sits there and talks quietly to people until they see things his way." - Eddie Sparks "He gave us a boat called The Foxy Lady! Imagine that . . . the Baptist Church and The Foxy Lady! That was a lot of fun! With Doc's help, the church was able to sell The Foxy Lady for $60,000, but for a while, it certainly caused a few waves!" -Dr. O. R. Rice SHARECROPPER'S SON The Story of Doc Garland Granger His mother named him Doc, and though she never did say why, the name has served Doc Garland Granger very well for 94 years. Born in a sharecropper's shack, Doc spent his childhood laboring in the cotton fields and tobacco patches of Robeson County, North Carolina. When, at age 17, he left the farm and set out to make his fortune, Doc carried with him enduring faith in God, indomitable entrepreneurial spirit and innate "tobacco patch wisdom." With only a 4th grade education, the tall, handsome, sinewy son of a sharecropper was destined to become an icon of the steel industry, a successful hotelier, restaurateur, and real estate developer, a highly respected member of the Masonic Temple, a yachtsman, philanthropist and philosopher. Sharecropper's Son is the inspiring story of a man who achieved success despite facing insurmountable challenges. Doc Granger is a man whose legacy of love is laced with laughter; whose homespun intelligence is like money in the bank; and whose heart has always been big enough to forgive, forge ahead and live life to the fullest.

Download Free Yeomen, Sharecroppers, and Socialists PDF by Kyle Grant Wilkison Full Book and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the nineteenth century ended in Hunt County, Texas, a way of life was dying. The tightly knit, fiercely independent society of the yeomen farmers--"plain folk," as historians have often dubbed them--was being swallowed up by the rising tide of a rapidly changing, cotton-based economy. A social network based on family, religion, and community was falling prey to crippling debt and resulting loss of land ownership. For many of the rural people of Hunt County and similar places, it seemed like the end of the world. In Yeomen, Sharecroppers, and Socialists historian Kyle G. Wilkison analyzes the patterns of plain-folk life and the changes that occurred during the critical four decades spanning the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. Political protest evolved in the wake of the devastating losses experienced by the poor rural majority, and Wilkison carefully explores the interplay of religion and politics as Greenbackers, Populists, and Socialists vied for the support of the dispossessed tenant farmers and sharecroppers. With its richly drawn contextualization and analysis of the causes and effects of the epochal shifts in plain-folk society, Kyle G. Wilkison's Yeomen, Sharecroppers, and Socialists will reward students and scholars in economic, regional, and agricultural history.

Download Free Childhood Stories and Perspectives PDF by William L. Alston Full Book and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter and Julia Alston were two parents with two different upbringings—one was from a family of means, and the other was from a family with very little. One was about trying to have success and wealth, and the other was about having nothing, spending and splurging and wasting more than could be grasped. Both Walter and his spouse, Julia, had major flaws. Both were all about him and herself. They had no plans to effectively share between themselves or among their ten children. They were all in it for themselves and not for each other and certainly not for their offspring. Despite their selfishness, they left their children with more than they realized; they left their children a treasure trove of stories—stories that were handed down through several generations from their parents and their parents’ parents. For generations, this had transpired by word of mouth that revealed family history, culture, entertainment, and family accomplishments. These stories brought pride, pleasure, and a sense of direction and well-being to the Alston family. These stories brought assured tangibles that would encourage, empower, teach, and would point the way forward.
Download Free The Journey of My Father's Son PDF by Jerry L. Jacobs Full Book and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a synopsis of my life with the intention of showing how God intervened in my life, and how I reacted to circumstances He created for me for the benefit of others. It is a book of brokenness and healing. It is a book about how He took away all my crutches and left me with nothing to cling to but Himself. It is about my life in the worst of personal situations—where my life ended at Clingman’s Dome and how I was reborn, with an injection of hope from Him, in the same instant. It is about God’s preservation of my life for His purpose. It is about the joy found around the dining table, about the disintegration of my family, and about how God put it back together the way He saw fit. My life started at the edge of a cotton field in the middle of World War II with a life-threatening disease attacking me before I reached one year of age. It is about my total lack of social skills and how God prepared me for higher education in preparation for speaking in front of a thousand people. My life was a battleground with Satan’s attempt to destroy me, and God who intervened at the last second. Being His child assures me that nothing can happen to me without God’s approval, and I have shared those events in this book. It is a book of spiritual warfare with God as the victor and me as the prize.

Book excerpt: In All My Born Days -- Stories by a Sharecropper's Son, a historical autobiography, Kenneth R. Shipe looks back on his early life in the poverty-stricken hills of West Virginia, and recalls how his parents struggled during the Depression to scratch a living from the soil for a family of ten. He tells how a New Deal farm loan made it possible for his father to work as a sharecropper in Maryland and describes the primitive processes the Shipe family used for growing and harvesting crops, butchering animals and preserving meat. The Shipes were ruled by the forces of nature: bitter cold winters; a flood that washed over their West Virginia home; and a forest fire that surrounded their house in Maryland and had Ken and his family flat on their bellies, gasping for breath. Ken remembers humorous incidents from his days in a country schoolhouse, and how he almost lost his life when his new bicycle ran off a mountain road. And he writes about World War II, which snatched up his brothers and critical farm helpers, leading to failure of the Shipes' sharecropping venture and subsequently his own call to duty as a Marine in the Korean War.
