Book excerpt: The global events rapidly unfolding around us are a source of alarm and confusion to many. Conflict, hatred and violence, often perpetrated in the name of religion, have become the order of the day. What is the Jewish perspective on these matters? Is there a reason the Jewish People is almost invariably at the vortex of these conflicts or is it just a coincidence? Where is all this leading? Is there an end goal to history? In this thought-provoking and compelling work, Roy S. Neuberger explores the broad picture of world history through the prism of the Torah?s timeless wisdom. Using historical patterns and precedents as indicators and harbingers of the future, he presents a structured and gripping approach to navigating the Worldstorm and a vision of how the storm will end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: An uninteresting man of mistaken importance struggles to understand his role in life. This imaginative and thought-provoking book of quips, reflections, and antagonisms reads in the spirit of science fiction. The author deems it “philosofiction”. Δ * * * The year is 2066. Silverberg, the world’s youngest and undisputedly most powerful country, generally entertains only the most prominent visitors and immigrants. However, this year it has intentionally attracted an otherwise uninteresting young man of average station. When the powers that lured him cannot find him, the hunt begins. Misunderstanding his importance, multiple operatives of high station and various loyalties race to find him. As time progresses, the intensity thickens. Those who join this man find their own lives disrupted and changed forever, swept up by the storm surrounding him. While he means no harm to anybody, his pursuers will not rest until he is found and destroyed. It is only a matter of time. Bombarded with varying opinions about the truth, this man struggles for discernment and understanding, but what he believes cannot save him - or can it? * * * Pragmatic dogma, theology, and atheology collide and argue in the background as we follow this unhero through a quick, comedic, dark, and philosophical journey of determining what he is - deciding between God, Man, and The Machine. This 316 page volume includes maps, art, footnotes, appendices, and more. Δ Phi·los·o·phy Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods. Fic·tion A literary work whose content is produced by the imagination and is not necessarily based on fact.

Book excerpt: Pardon This Intrusion gathers together 47 pieces by John Clute, some written as long ago as 1985, though most are recent. The addresses and essays in Part One, "Fantastika in the World Storm", all written in the twenty-first century, reflect upon the dynamic relationship between fantastika - an umbrella term Clute uses to describe science fiction, horror and fantasy - and the world we live in now. Of these pieces, "Next", a contemporary response to 9/11, has not been revised; everything else in Part One has been reworked, sometimes extensively. Parts Two, Three and Four include essays and author studies and introductions to particular works; as they are mostly recent, Clute has felt free to rework them where necessary. The few early pieces - including "Lunch with AJ and the WOMBATS", a response to the Scientology scandal at the Brighton WorldCon in 1987 - are unchanged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume IV of the Oxford English Texts Complete Works of Oscar Wilde is the first variorum edition of Wilde's major critical writing; it includes the critical essays which were re-published in book-form in his life-time - that is, those anthologised in Intentions and The Soul of Man - as well as his graduate essay usually known by the title The Rise of Historical Criticism, but which this volume titles Historical Criticism. The Introduction gives a detailed account of the composition of each of the essays: it gives a new explanation for the relationship between the 'The Decay of Lying' and 'Pen, Pencil, and Poison' (arguing that they are best understood as companion pieces); it provides the first concrete demonstration that Wilde did, on occasions, knowingly 'copy' his own work; and it reveals that substantial cuts were made to some of Wilde's essays (without his full consent) by the periodical editors with whom he worked. The edition also provides, for the first time, a full collation of the textual variants between the published versions of Wilde's essays (that is, both book and periodical), and all extant manuscripts; in addition it establishes a new, authoritative text for Historical Criticism, based on an examination of the original manuscript, which differs significantly from that printed by Robert Ross in his 1908 Collected Edition (and subsequently reprinted in the Collins Complete Works). The annotation to the edition reveals the full extent of Wilde's 'borrowings' both from his own work, and from other writers; it also reveals that much of Historical Criticism is in fact paraphrasing or translating well-known classical texts, and that the some of denseness of the argument is due to ellipses in Wilde's text that were disguised by earlier editors.

Book excerpt: Alone. Lost. Hunted. Pulled from chill waters, she doesn’t tell her rescuer that someone’s trying to kill her. Nor that capture would be far worse. She doesn’t tell him – because she can’t. She doesn’t remember. Why though was Mason Dane in New Francisco Bay in the middle of the night? Was it entirely by luck that he lifted her from its cold embrace? Who is he? Can she trust him? Can she trust herself? With her odd behaviors, her strange abilities… is she even human? It’s 2063, decades after magic’s return. Hunted and on the run, it’s not the shadowy Department she should fear: it’s those who stole her memories. That inner void however, that emptiness, has drawn the attention of uncanny forces. For humanity, the risk is Freedom itself. But for one lost girl – annihilation.
